Pakistani Fokker F-27 twin-engine passenger plane which was crashed in Multan, Pakistan, Monday, July 10, 2006A Pakistan International Airlines plane has crashed shortly after take off - killing all 45 people on board.
The airline's chief executive, Farooq Shah, says all 45 people on board the passenger plane were killed in Monday's crash in central Pakistan.
He says the plane went down just a few minutes after taking off from the airport in Multan.
The domestic flight, en route to Lahore in eastern Pakistan, is believed to have lost radio contact with the control tower before going down.
The wreckage was located in an open field just a few kilometers from the airport.
Witnesses say the plane appeared to be spinning out of control just before it slammed into the ground and burst into flames.
An investigation into the cause of the crash is underway.

The PIA folkers are in such a bad condition that sometimes while flying in these i think its a miracle that even with such a bad condition these fly.
its time to replace these folkers.

My sincere condolences to all who lost family or friends!
PIA's Fokker-27 fleet of 4 is one of the oldest in the world and its overdue the replacement which was sought ten years ago already!
Its finally being replaced by ATR-42-500 and will be taken out of service next year.

Govt ignored warning in May 2005

LAHORE - The Federal Government had completely ignored the warning of its Parliamentary Secretary on Defence in May 2005, regarding the pathetic condition of Fokkers.
Details obtained by The Nation revealed that on May 16, 2005, Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Major (r) Tanveer Hussain had raised alarm in the National Assembly over the critical condition of Fokkers and asked the government to ground the entire fleet immediately.
Mr Hussain had also disclosed on the floor of the House that most of the Fokkers have completed more than 200,000 hours flights against their recommended life of 90,000 hours flights.
It is on the record of the National Assembly that instead of taking action on the bewailing of his Parliamentary Secretary, the then Minister of State for Defence Zahid Hamid, now Privatisation and Investment Minister, ardently defended that out of a fleet of 14, eight Fokkers were still fit for flight.
He, however, did not support the idea of his Parliamentary Secretary regarding the ground of the entire fleet of Fokkers.
“Had the government taken the hue and cry of Parliamentary Secretary on Defence, who knew the bitter facts about the health of Fokkers, serious in May last year, the bloody crash of Fokker in Multan on Monday could have been averted,” said an official of National Assembly.
Interesting to note is that in 2002 Pakistan International Airlines had announced a plan to replace the fleet of Fokkers with ATR aircrafts, but the plan could not be implemented speedily. According to history of air-crashes in Pakistan, the Monday’s incident is 11th mishap and second major crash in the country in which all the 45 people on board, including the crew members, lost their lives.
So far more than 605 people have died in air-crashes, involving Pakistani aircrafts.

That fokker was built in 1964, 42 years back, that is some thing and i should't have to remind that it was passenger plane. Still they hav'nt grounded the other 6 remaining, :hrr: dono what they are up to. That was the sixth incident in the last 36 yrs resulted by fokker .

1,442 fatalities registered in total 147 accidents worldwide

LAHORE: Pakistan has one of the highest rates of Fokker 27 Friendship accidents as 1,442 fatalities have been registered in total 147 accidents worldwide since 1960 while in Pakistan 156 people have lost their lives in 13 accidents of various types so far.

The first ever reported accident of F-27 was occurred on June 10, 1960 in Australia when a Trans Australia airliner crashed into the sea while on a visual approach to Mackay airport runway resulting in death of all onboard 29 passengers and crew.

Apart from Monday's crash in Multan, the latest reported accident of F-27 occurred on April 16, 2006. The Fokker of Bolivian airline ran off the runway during rain, causing substantial damage to the undercarriage and wings. An 80-year old woman died of a heart attack a few hours after the accident.

According to information gathered from official websites of Aviation Safety Network and History of PIA, the first reported accident in Pakistan was crash of F-27 in June 25, 1964 in Dhaka, formerly East Pakistan. No one was died in the accident out of total 26 people onboard.

The Fokker was approaching Dhaka when a line squall passed over the airport. After crossing the runway threshold, the plane encountered severe gusts and limited visibility. The aircraft stalled and landed very heavily, causing both wings to break off.

The first fatal accident of F-27 in Pakistan occurred in October 8, 1965 when four onboard crew members of freight plane died in the accident near Naran. The Sakardu bound flight took off from Rawalpindi.

The major crash of F-27 in Pakistan happened in 1970. The accident was very much identical to that of Multan crash. On August 6, 1970, at 02.14h, the F-27 took off from Rawalpindi for a 44-minute flight to Lahore. About three minutes later the aircraft crashed into the ground, left wing low at high speed. Weather was bad at the time of the accident: thunderstorms in heavy rainfall and gusty winds. All 30 people flying on F-27 died in the accident.

On December 12, 1971, 4 fatalities reported in the crash of plane near Iranian border with Pakistan. The flight was between Karachi-Zahedan. One of the major crashes of F-27 occurred on August 25, 1989 when Gilgit-Islamabad flight crashed near Bunji, killing all 54 people onboard.

The fate of Gilgit-Islamabad flight is still unknown. It is believed that Fokker F-27 Friendship of PIA carrying 54 people crashed in the Himalaya mountains. The one of the most controversial accidents of F-27 in Pakistan was happened on February 20, 2003. The F-27 of Pakistan Air Force departed Islamabad at 08:00 for a flight to Kohat Air Base. Pakistani Air Force Chief Mushaf Ali Mir was to conduct an annual inspection of the air base. The aircraft crashed into the side of a 3,000-foot mountain, covered in fog, which resulted in killing of 17 people onboard.

It is pertinent to mention here that the F-27 is one of the most widely used airliners in the world, though the Douglas DC-3 holds the record. Some 92 airliners of the world used to operate F-27 while military operators of past and present are totalled to 31. Other operators including various government agencies and organisations and corporations are to the tune of nine.

Chairman says company experts due to help probe; no plan to ground them; heirs of crash victims to get Rs 2 lakh each

MULTAN: Declaring the Fokker aircraft air-worthy, Pakistan International Airline chairman Tariq Kirmani has said the manufacturing company of Fokker plane engines has been contacted who are ready for cooperation and their experts were reaching Pakistan to assist the inquiry teams in investigating the plane crash incident.

Talking to journalists here on Monday soon after his arrival, the PIA chairman said it would be quite difficult to establish causes behind the incident including sabotage or technical fault; however safe travel is first priority of PIA. He said that there was no plan under consideration to ground Fokker planes, adding, the Fokkers are fit and air-worthy. He said D-4 planes had been grounded but no decision has been taken to ground the Fokker planes.

He announced Rs 200,000 financial compensation for each family of the victims of the Fokker plane crash, adding the PIA has made all arrangements to transport families of the victims to Multan and will arrange the transportation of bodies of the victims to their respective areas at PIA's expense.

Meanwhile PIA engineering wing senior vice president air vice marshal Iftikhar Gul Monday has assured said that probe report into the tragic incident would be completed within a week.

Talking to newsmen here, he said that PIA special investigation team members include Wing commander Syed Nasim, deputy DG CAA, AVM Iftikhar Gul and is being headed by Air Commodore Junaid Amin have reached the Raj Ghat where the ill-fated plane crashed to view the crash site from various angles. "It will be premature to say anything about the cause of the crash. We will compile a probe report within a week," he added. Country loses one of the ‘most productive’ scientistsBy Awais Saleem

LAHORE: The Vice-Chancellor of Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan, Dr Muhammad Naseer Khan, who lost his life in the tragic air crash Monday, was an iconic figure in the field of material sciences and leaves the stage prematurely after a thoroughly eventful career.

He was serving as the Rector of Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute (GIKI), Topi, before joining the BZU on May 2, 2005. He immediately took up the task to revamp the academic and research infrastructure of the premier institution and some 18-20 such projects were in the pipeline including the establishment of BZU sub-campuses in Dera Ghazi Khan and Sahiwal.

He is survived by a wife, three sons and two daughters. Dr Khan was also a British national and had decided to serve his homeland for the love of the land instead of opting for greener pastures.

While working abroad in different academic institutions, he played a key role in establishing scientific and technical collaboration between foreign and home universities during his stay at GIKI of late and at BZU, Multan, more recently. At the GIKI, he had established a state-of-the-art research laboratory titled ‘Fabrication and Characterisation of Advanced Materials’ in the faculty of Engineering Sciences. As BZU VC, he endeavoured to create conducive work environment in the previously politicised and troubled institution and took unprecedented bold steps to achieve outstanding results.

ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Defence and Defence Production took strict notice of delay on the part of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) in replacing old Fokker planes and gave directions for presenting the investigation report of Multan Fokker plane tragedy in the next meeting of the committee.

Talking to Online on Tuesday, the chairman of committee Senator Nisar Memon expressed deep grief over the loss of lives in the Multan plane crash and said the government should take serious notice of this tragedy and conduct complete investigation in this regard.

The senator said that a meeting would be convened when the investigation report was completed. Chairman PIA and the high ups of Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and Ministry of Defence will be summoned in the meeting, he added.

Responding to a question, Memon said that PIA had earlier told the Senate body that Fokker planes were being replaced with new aircraft but only one Fokker plane had been replaced so far.

He stressed that Fokker planes for Northern Areas, Multan, Bahawalpur and Rahimyar Khan routes should be changed to avoid such tragedy in future.
