Six days short of turning 23, Army Capt killed in Pak firing

Jammu: An Army Captain, who was among those killed in the heavy Pakistani shelling along the LoC in Poonch and Rajouri districts of Jammu and Kashmir today, was six days short of his 23rd birthday, a senior Army official said.

Captain Kapil Kundu from Ransika village of Gurgaon district was killed when the Pakistani forces opened unprovoked firing and shelling along the LoC in the Bhimbher Gali sector of Rajouri district this evening.

He would have turned 23 on February 10, the official said.

In the shelling, three jawans were also killed, senior Army officials said.

Earlier in the day, two teenagers and a jawan were injured in the Shahpur sector of Poonch district in the shelling from across the border, a police official said. (Agencies)

Officer, three soldiers killed in Pakistan firing on LoC (Fourth Lead)

Four Indian soldiers, including a 22-year-old officer, were killed and four other persons were injured on Sunday in Pakistani firing on the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri and Poonch districts, Army officials said.

Indian Army also said that "heavy damage" was inflicted on Pakistan Army posts in retaliatory action.

A statement said Pakistan Army initiated "unprovoked" and "indiscriminate" firing around 3.30 p.m. in Bhimber Gali sector in Rajouri.

"Indian Army retaliated strongly and effectively and heavy damage has been inflicted on Pakistani Army posts," said a defence statement.

"However, in the exchange of fire, one officer and three jawans were grievously injured and succumbed to their injuries..."

The killed soldiers include Captain Kapil Kundu, who would have celebrated his 23rd birthday on February 10. Hailing from Haryana's Gurugram, he is survived by his mother Sunita.

The others were Riflemen Ramavatar, 27 from Baraka village in Madhya Pradesh's Gwalior, Subham Singh, 23 from Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua, and Havilder Roshan Lal, 43 of Jammu and Kashmir's Samba.

"Martyrdom of Indian Army soldiers will not go in vain.

The unprovoked action by Pakistani Army will be given a befitting response," the statement added.

Earlier on Sunday, a 15-year old girl and a soldier were injured in Pakistan ceasefire violation in Shahpur area of the LoC in Poonch district.

According to army officials, the firing started around 11 a.m. with Pakistani soldiers using small arms, automatics and mortars. Indian troops retaliated strongly, they added.

SRINAGAR: Four soldiers were killed and another injured in shelling by Pakistani troops across the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district on Sunday.

Pakistan intensified firing at Indian military posts and villages along the Line of Control or LoC in Poonch and Rajouri districts this morning, violating the ceasefire. A teenage girl and a soldier were injured in Poonch. The Indian Army said it was responding appropriately.


It was the second time in three days that the Pakistani Army has targeted Poonch, using automatic weapons and mortars. They targeted military and civilian facilities in nearly a dozen areas of the Balakote sector last week.

Indian forces say there have been over 130 instances of ceasefire violations by Pakistan last month, the highest since 2014.



At least 14 people including eight civilians and six security personnel had been killed in Pakistan firing in the Jammu region between January 18 and 22. More than 60 people were injured and dozens of homes were damaged and burnt down in the firing.


More than 300 schools situated close to the Line of Control and the international border in Rajouri, Poonch, Jammu, Samba and Kathua districts were closed for a week between January 21 and 28, for the security of villagers. Hundreds have abandoned their homes close to the border, leaving behind cattle and crops.


Speaking at an election rally in Agartala, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said, India wanted peaceful relations with Pakistan, but the country's forces have been told that if one bullet comes from across the border, the security personnel should fire countless bullets to retaliate. "I have given standing orders to our forces to shoot limitless bullets to retaliate a single fire on our territory by the Pakistani forces," Mr Singh said.
