Kolkata: Thirty-one infants have died at BC Roy Hospital in Kolkata in the last four days. Reports suggested that the children suffered from malnutrition. The hospital authorities has claimed that a sudden spurt in number of terminally-ill patients referred from other hospitals led to the infant deaths.
The State Health Department has constituted a two-member inquiry committee to probe the deaths. State Senior Health Dept official Tridib Banerjee said, "There has been no medical negligence on the part on the Hospital."
There have earlier incident of infant deaths in other parts of West Bengal due to malnutirtion. Around 16 infants died in May in Malda due to malnutrition.
