Iran: 30 million lose access to foreign email services

By Associated Press, Updated: Saturday, February 11, 2:20 PM

TEHRAN, Iran — An Iranian news agency reports that more than 30 million people in the country have lost access to foreign email services such as Gmail, Yahoo mail and Hotmail.

The Saturday report by the semiofficial Mehr agency says that the authorities in the national telecommunications company declined to comment on the outage that began Thursday, saying that it had no connection to them.

Iran has occasionally restricted the Internet since the turmoil that followed the 2009 elections and blocked websites including Facebook, Twitter, Voice of America and the BBC Farsi service.

Iran: 30 million lose access to foreign email services - The Washington Post

In order to allegedly contain potential uprisings, the nation of Iran is cutting off Internet access.

The Iranian government has reportedly begun blocking access to the Internet. A post on Hacker News explains that since yesterday, it’s been difficult to impossible to get online. “Since Thursday Iranian government has shutted [sic] down the HTTPS protocol which has caused almost all Google services (Gmail, and Google.com itself) to become inaccessible,” Sara70 writes. “Almost all websites that rely on Google APIs (like Wolphram Alpha) won’t work.”

This month marks the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution (a celebration which continues through March), and the Iranian government is allegedly attempting to contain potential demonstrations by quieting citizens’ connection to the rest of the world.

Websites using HTTPS are many: in addition to Google and its various Web products, they include Facebook, Hotmail, and Yahoo. An Iranian citizen who wished to remain anonymous told Cnet this morning that despite the widespread news, the government is denying these actions.

If the Iranian officials plan to cut off citizens during the entire holiday, that means Iran could be in the dark until next month. Iran operates its Internet much like China, meaning it has its own state run firewall. According to various reports, work-arounds typically used to circumvent this are not working.

The how can i access my 3 accounts right now?
Just hotmail opens up a bit slower than before

. .
Good decision. Now NSA will not be able to read the emails of all Iranians, as they used to do. Iran must develop its own email, search engines, video sharing and networking sites. It will also make Iran immune to cyber attacks which Iran has been the first victim of.

Ahh! but if the Iranians retreat into their own internet universe, will they be doomed to suffer from their own incestuous stupidity? Answer: YES!!! (And, as a corollary, God reward them their own stupidity. Inshallah.)

This is nothing more than the typical behavior of dictatorship in fear of the people. If this happens wherever YOU are at, you would be screaming bloody murder.

Do you want to Isolate Iran from the rest of the world.. From their own email to whom they are going to send mail without connecting to the Internet, only to Iranians?

Censorship fears grow as websites are inaccessible

Google, Yahoo blocked in some Iranian cities

Internet users in Tehran and some other cities in Iran were unable to access Google, Yahoo and other foreign websites on Friday, with some fearing government censorship ahead of the anniversary of a major opposition march.

Traffic monitoring tools outside Iran and reports from people inside the country confirmed that Google services, particularly Gmail, were inaccessible to many Iranians.

For internet users inside Iran, connecting to http websites, in particular Google and Yahoo, has been either extremely slow and only through virtual private networks (VPNs), which route traffic through secure tunnels to the outside world, or not possible at all since Thursday evening.

Some users have reported problems accessing any sites that use the secure https website, which encrypts traffic, including online banking services, as well as proxy servers, which can be used to redirect traffic in and out of the country.

Google, which is used by many as the gateway to the web, had not previously been blocked.

‘Opposition rally'

Tehran blocked Facebook in May 2009 in the run-up to its election. The social network has been largely inaccessible since and remained so on Friday.

"It must be related to the opposition rally on Tuesday," said one conservative analyst of this latest disruption.

The Co-ordination Council of the Green Path of Hope, a committee based outside of Iran, which is affiliated to the opposition green movement, has called on Iranians to march peacefully on February 14 and force the regime to release the opposition leaders.

I believe Iran should follow the same model as Japan did after being destroyed they will be reborn as a peaceful nation after the madness and racism is destroyed by the USA.

Good luck to Iran, but should've gotten own internet infrastructure in place before this.

Having an independent internet is very important.

Many people believe the US should do through the same process too. They have not seen a war on their home soil for more than 100 years. Seeing one might make them more peaceful
