30 Greece deportees stopped from disembarking plane in Islamabad
- December 03, 2015 - Updated 1241 PKT - From Web Edition
ISLAMABAD: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Thursday stopped 30 deportees from disembarking an airplane from Greece that landed at Islamabad's Benazir Bhutto International airport earlier today.
"On the interior minister's orders, the FIA has not allowed these illegally deported people and the aircraft crew to leave the plane," the interior ministry said in a statement.
The interior ministry said the 30 were "unverified deportees" who had arrived in Islamabad on a charter flight from Greece.
The interior ministry said it has ordered the FIA not to allow any passenger to leave the plane without thorough verification of documents and citizenship. It said that Greek authorities had not provided proper documented proof of the passengers being Pakistani citizens and their deportation.
Sources said that the interior minister had asked the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) over why it had allowed the charter plane to land.
The incident comes a week after high-level talks with the European Union to settle a dispute over forced repatriations.
In a press conference on Wednesday, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said deportation of any citizen on documents issued by any other country is a violation of international laws and human rights.
The interior minister has earlier sent a letter to the Canadian High Commission over reported violations of procedure to send deportees back to Pakistan.
