3 ways for building up IAF fighter squadron

The Defence ministry is likely to pursue three other routes to make up for the depleting numbers of fighter squadrons for the Indian Air Force. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s announcement that India will buy 36 Rafale fighter jets would compensate only a fraction of what the IAF has demanded from the Defence ministry.

Faced with declining fighter strength for years, IAF wanted 126, or six and a half squadrons, of medium multi-role fighters. The government has now given it two squadrons of French fighters, and hopes other options would be exercised to make up for the rest.

The first option would be to ask Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, Bengaluru, to accelerate the delivery of the indigenous Tejas Light Combat Aircraft Mark-II for quicker induction. The Tejas LCA was thought of as the original MiG replacement but the aircraft is way behind in time schedule for induction in the air force. The first assembly line version of Tejas was handed over to the IAF only in January 2015.

Other choices would involve negotiating with Russia for buying more Su-30 MKI jets and stepping on the gas for the fifth generation fighter aircraft – being co-developed with Russia –which is suffering from time and cost overruns. IAF has a sanctioned strength of 44 fighter squadrons, but a large number of them are outdated MiG-21s that were inducted in the 1960s. As per the IAF scheme of things, only the upgraded MiG-21 Bisons will fly till 2025.

Last year, the air force informed the Parliamentary Standing Committee on defence that its “active” strength is only 25 squadrons.

IAF operates Su-30MKI, Mirage-2000, Jaguars, MiG-21 Bison and MiG-27. While the phasing out of some of the older generation MiGs have begun, all MiGs are slated to retire between 2014 and 2025. The Su-30 MKI are heavier aircraft and can’t undertake missions which a light weight medium aircraft like MiG can carry out.

India has contracted for 272 Su-30MKI from Russia for licensed production at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. So far more than 200 platforms were inducted into the IAF, which have positioned these fighter jets at Pune, Bareilly, Tezpur, Chabua, Halwara and Jodhpur and has planned to set up a new Su-30 MKI squadron at Sirsa in Haryana.

Any update on AURA? Even Iran has made a somewhat workable UCAV.

Not to mention the 45 Mig 29K of the Indian Navy.

Nothing new I this article . It's just a recap . And many members will have lots of idea better than the OP . Tejas MK2 is no where in the picture , AMCA still in paper so does FGFA . Now how to increase the number ?

Place order for 80 MK1 from 40 . To replace Mig21 .

Go for another 36 Rafale from France so rest 124 can be made in India . If 32 jets are about 4 billion India can easily afford to place the order for another 2/3 batch of 36 jets each years (Am just saying) So money is not the issue . But the time frame is.

Su35S already under trails in India as per some reports . If this the case 60 of them can be manufactured at HAL . At 70-80 mil a pop , upgraded to Stealth standard , This will boost our capabilities to a new level . Along with Upgraded Super Sukois these Su35S can be used in a mix same like Upgraded Mirage and Rafale .

Go for 1 St squadron of PakFa . With 14
Numbers . 100 mil a pop it won't be a big deal. In fact our Pilots and IAF overall will get hold of something that we never had . Better yo training , logistics for tactics planning . What's wrong ? FGFA will get some breather . But has to be pushed for 3 tears deadline as we per our new request .

Rest of all Tejas MK2 , AMCA has no other choice but to spell out the magic words and pull some miracle to get inducted into the IAF at least by 2020-2022 . Super upgrade must be adopted for rest of the Su30MKI some 60+ to complete 272 as we ordered.

But since we started with small number of MKI and ended with 272 . If we can reduce the cost of Made in India Rafale then we can expect more orders once our IAF realised the full power of the fighter .

So just adding MK2 and AMCA won't solve our problems as this author says . Poor IAF waiting to replace Mig for many decades now. Spending is compulsory. So why not full the gap once and for all and focus on domestic fighter for the future . 42/48 Squadrons is what we need . Right now only 25-35 are operational squadrons .

Wish we adopt the same with Subs as well . Increased to 10 instead of sticking with 6 orders .

Really congress simply destroyed Indian defence just for sake that they dnt want to be in controversy for corruption.

Just like Submarine fleet, fighter jets are one of biggest need of India today.

Very good decision taken by Modi government
