Dhaka, Mar 23 (bdnews24.com)—Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) president Oli Ahmed has denied as 'baseless' the fact that three million people embraced martyrdom during the nation's war of independence in 1971.

Martyrs are those who took up arms during the war and died in direct combat. And no more than 30,000 people did that during the liberation war, said Oli, himself a freedom fighter, at a discussion meeting on Friday.

His remarks caused rumble among the audience and organisers, National Awami Party, stepped in to calm the situation.

"A total of eight thousand soldiers participated in the liberation war. And in addition to them, the number of people participating in direct war would not exceed 20000," he added at the discussion held at National Press Club.

According to the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs, as many as 30,000 soldiers fought the war in 11 sectors across the country while the number of guerrilla fighters participating in the war was 1,45,000.

Besides, Mujib Bahini, National Awami Party, Chhatra Union, Communist Party's guerrilla wing, and individual people's group, like the one organised by Kader Siddiqui, also fought during the war.

Oli came under scathing criticism in November last year after he made derogatory remarks about women MPs and is currently facing a defamation suit. He joined BNP-led coalition recently.

A sad episode made by clueless leaders from both sides and there were no winners in this tragedy. It is like a FAMILY FUED that got out of hand. Bangladesh and Pakistan are still and will always be brotherly Nations.

Between 30 000 - 60 000 but these include dead from all sides of the conflict.

I was reading Times Magazine archives of perhaps "July or September 1971" and the magazine was saying that minimum of about 200,000 people had been killed in Operation Searchlight. You can check at their website.

Oli Ahmed is a rajakar even though is a 'freedom fighter", he is probably not a freedom fighter; faking it. What is his credibility? is he a statistician? did he do any proper research with field studies? newspapers from usa and ussr reported high figures. Who cares what this rajakar has to say?

The death count of "3 million" is definitely baseless, but it's funny how we ourselves try to deny a genocide committed on our own ethnicity. Munshiji, whatever the number is, the killing of innocents started from Day 1:

I think on March 26, these evil terrorists were using their rickshaws to destroy Pak army:

We always have to remember that there is Mir Jafar among us, putting their personal interest before national and people's interest. So the fault is all ours (both Eastern and Western wing), not to identify these Mir Jafar's in time and believing in them. The enemy then found an opportunity to create fitna. It does not matter what the exact number of people lost, it will always be debatable. But the important thing is that we need to learn how we can stop Mir Jafar's shaking hand with the enemy and destroy our nation.

I asked an older friend of mine who personally knows many Awami League leaders and had them as business partners. He said that the allegation of unfair treatment from West Pakistani's had some truth in it, Mujib was interested in power and India found opportunity to use Mujib, helped the creation of Awami League and the rest is history. So essentially what he was saying was that Agartala Conspiracy was actually true, but they could not find proper evidence and prove the case.

The other thing he said was that Pakistan Army could easily let Mujib rule for 5 years and his real face would then be revealed and he would then loose election. If some patience was shown even after provocation by RAW and Awami League, and Operation Search light was not initiated, then both East and West wing would have been better off today and so many people would not get killed. This now gives the Big Liar's opportunity to make propaganda and inflate the numbers as much as possible.

That is all history now, 40 years have passed, we need to look towards future, not the past. Only reason we should look at the past and analyze it is to learn from our mistakes.

OT, but one reason why I keep going against Assad regime is that it is killing its own people with its army and it reminds me of 1971. The result of killing is never good, it makes enemies out of brothers and the scar takes generations to heal.

In other words, the fault was of evil hindus whose chanakya tactics caused barrier amongst brothers and compel them to commit fitna. How convenient!

I just wonder why the people of my land did all the hardship for these bunch. They should just have let the PA do whatever they were doing.

Anyway the article says about casualties in direct war. There were may who didn't participate in direct war but were killed just for being Awami supporter, Hindu, Student or intellectual. That's why we call this genocide actually. Munshi as usual put a spin around the story.

Every single Bangladeshi I have came across online have their family participated in Liberation war, and if older, he himself was a soldier! :P

Exagerrated numbers are usually baseless.. since 3 million dead would have effected the Bengali genetic pool and populous for decades.

however.
whether its 3 million , 300000 or 3000.
It does not take away the shame on the west Pakistani leadership and the bigots in command on how they treated the Bengalis.
A people who are more responsible for Pakistan then any one in Punjab, Sindh or then NWFP.
All these provinces and their leadership showed some part of doubt and tried to have their vested interests promoted before voting for Pakistan.
it was Bengalis who voted wholeheartedly for Pakistan.. and got nothing in return.

It's never possible to quantify the number of people who were killed, however it was surely a pretty big number. The report of International Commission of Jurists regarding Bangladesh war doesn't quote any number.
