New Delhi, Oct 17: Making a mockery of security at the Delhi airport, thieves have swiped 1,700 scrapped aircraft engine parts weighing about 3,000 kg and worth over Rs 10 lakh from the AI's engine overhaul complex.

The theft of goods, mostly the engine parts and blades of Boeing aircraft, came to light in the second week of June when one of godowns was opened, a senior Air India official said. It took two-months for the airline officials to report the theft, and an FIR was filed in the last week of September.

"As soon as the theft was reported we started an internal probe. But the officials could not find anything concrete and the persons responsible. So the matter was reported to police on September 23," the official said requesting anonymity.

The goods were received at the godown between December 2010 and March 2011 and no one checked the godown since then till it was opened in June. Suspecting theft from other godowns, airline officials carried out inspections and found parts missing from there, too. Police suspect that the theft on such a large scale could not have taken place without the the help of an insider.

Now there is a problem with security in a big big way. Howe do you smuggle 3000 kg out??
Incredible news.
:enjoy:

Stealing of public goods is so common.

electric wires for the posts were in great demand.

Scrap value of iron is also good and 3000kg.. must have been a regular thing not a one off steal.

Must be some insider help to do such.

Some poor security guard gonna loose his job over this for sure.

Mate for scrap metal you get up to £9 per kilo in the uk.
Do you reckon they carried it out in their lunch boxes?? :azn:

Must be carried near the boundary walls and then thrown outside where somebody else collects it..

Its the usual way around here.

This is by no means a small security lapse, according to The Times, "Air India, which has debts of £5 Billion, was embarrassed when details of the haul came to light. They had been stored in hangars at Indira Gandhi International airport, which is guarded by 4000 security personnel. Police official suspect involvement of insiders.
Air India's image also suffered when a flight was stranded at Gatwick for nine hours at the weekend because a replacement crew were lost".

This is one reason why public limited companies like Air India should be dis-invested and private ones has to be encouraged.

Air India has crappy services anyway.

Imagine if 3000 Kgs of material can be shifted out in the presence of several thousand guards, the incident at Mehran must be like a walk in the park.....not that it's excusable in any way, but at the end of the day, it's the human factor that comes into equation.

You are comparing a commercial airport to your top notch naval base?

So you equate theft of scrap metal with the attack on Mehran ? You think Mehran was worth scrap metal ?? Have some pride dude !

With adjacent access to a Museum and a Marriage hall and a few guards,.....I wouldn't regard it as a secured facility.

It's not a question of scrap metal or pride......the issue is security environment.

Its a hand in gloves operation, all bigwigs are partners in crime.

I know yaar but i just checked on the net that the airport boasts of 4000 security personnel. Some serious bigwigs must have been involved. Not clever.

There was a lot of construction going at the airport, I wouldn't be surprised if they loaded the scrap on of the construction trucks and whisked it out of the airport.

=============================================================

P.S: Just saw the airport on Google Airport, its massive! At least 1000 planes big and small parked in the complex. Truly incredible:P
