Twenty five to thirty percent of the total population or about 30 to 40 million people of Pakistan are suffering from various mental disorders, while 15 to 20 million such people need to be admitted at psychiatric hospitals for treatment.
This was said by Karachi Psychiatric Hospital Managing Director Dr Syed Mubeen Akhtar on Tuesday.
He was addressing a press conference at Karachi Press Club in connection with World Mental Health Day to be observed today.
Akhtar said that psychological disorders affected the power of thinking and understanding, the way of talking and the attitude of a person, creating problems not only for his family but for the society as a whole.
The MD also said that mental disorders were curable by regular treatment. He stressed that in cases where people considered exorcising a patient, he was actually suffering from a kind of mental disorder.
Around 70 per cent patients with psychological disorders did not avail proper treatment at hospitals and rather wandered about at shrines or visited faith-healers.
Akhtar said the ever increasing number of suicides, violence, bloodshed and lawlessness in the country also suggested the gravity of the disorder as such crimes were the result of some mental illness.
He told that an awareness program with regards to such disorders would be organised on October 14 at Expo Center.
