China's 刘慧霞 Liu Huixia and 陈若琳 Chen Ruolin (R) bite on their gold medals as they pose at the women's synchronised 10m platform victory ceremony

Olympic champion Chen Ruolin swooped to her fourth successive world 10m synchro gold medal when she partnered Liu Huixia to victory to bring China their third diving title in the first three days of the FINA World Championships.

Chen, twice double Olympic champion in 10m individual and synchro, was diving at the Worlds with her fourth different partner but the result was the same as it had been at the last three editions of the championships: top spot on the podium by a big margin.

"In 2007, when I got my first gold in this event with Tong Jia, we were a very new duet. Today, pairing with Liu is an entire new experience: she is very young, but at the same time very strong and quite adaptable", the 21-year-old said.

Diving against the stunning backdrop of Gaudi's Sagrada Familia basilica, Chen and Liu flew high in a class of their own, soaring to gold with 356.28 points from their five final dives. Canada's Meaghan Benfeito and Roseline Filion took the silver(331.41) and Malaysia's Pandelela Rinong Pamg and Mun Yee Leong claimed the bronze(331.14).

Five perfect 10s from the judges greeted the opening back dive of Chen and Liu and they never looked back, winning by nearly 25 points. The Malaysian pair were second until the Canadians pipped them in the last round, just 0.27 points separating them at the end.

China's diving diva claims sixth world title in synchronized event

China's Wu Minxia claimed a record sixth gold medal in the 3m synchronized diving event at the FINA world championships in Barcelona on Saturday.

Olympic and world champion Wu partnered with Shi Tingmao as the pair piled up 338.40 points.

Italy took silver, courtesy of 307.80 points for Tania Cagnotto and Francesca Dellape, while Canadian pair Jennifer Abel and Pamela Ware took bronze with 292.08 points.

The Chinese result served warning they intend to emulate the 10 golds they managed in the 2011 championships back home in Shanghai.

For Wu it was a record sixth world 3m synchronized springboard title while the triumph was China's seventh in the event.

Wu and 1m springboard world titleholder Shi were far too strong as they brushed off a bold challenge from recently crowned European champions Cagnotto and Dallape, who actually led after the opening round before the favorites underlined their top status at Montjuic Municipal Pool.

In all, Wu now has amassed 13 world championships diving medals, seven of them golds.

"These are my seventh world championships, but this time I have a new partner," said Wu.

"This gold medal proves that our effort paid off. I am now the leader of the group, and I can bring them my experience."

Despite also winning gold in the event at three successive Olympics - 2004, 2008 and 2012 - the 27-year-old said she is not thinking about retirement.

"I know that most girls at my age normally think about other things in life, like having a family. I need more time to think about that," said Wu, who also collected 2012 Olympic gold in the 3m springboard.

Wu won the first four of her 3m synchro world titles with Guo Jingjing, who retired after winning 10 world championship golds and four Olympic golds.

The fifth was in 2011 with He Zi, with whom she won gold at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

The only time China failed to win the women's 3m synchro world title was in 1998, the year the event was introduced, when Russia's Irina Lashko and Yulia Pakhalina triumphed in Perth, Australia.

Guo won the 2005 title with Li Ting in place of Wu.

China's Huang Xuechen finished second with 95.5 points after the technical solo final in the synchronized swimming competition, matching her silver medal from Shanghai two years ago.

Russia's Svetlana Romashina won her first solo synchronized championship gold after scoring 96.8 points with a powerful routine at the Palau Sant Jordi.

Local favorite Ona Carbonell of Spain took bronze with 94.4 points.

In open water swimming, Tunisia's Oussama Mellouli added the 5km world title to his 10km Olympic crown.

American Haley Danita Anderson won a photo finish to claim gold in the women's 5km event to improve on the silver medal she gained at the Olympics in London last year.

It was a second world title for Mellouli, who also triumphed at the 1,500m in the pool in Rome in 2009.

He beat Canadian Eric Hedlin into silver, with Germany's Thomas Lurz winning bronze.

"Honestly, this was just as painful as the 10km," Mellouli said.

"The changes of pace, the buoys, it was tough but I am very happy."

Anderson edged Brazilian Poliana Okimoto by just two tenths of a second with Ana Marcela Cunha, the current 25km world champion, also from Brazil, third.

Li Shixin became the first man to retain the world 1m springboard crown, stretching China's hold on the event and bringing the leading diving nation its second World Championship title in three days.

Li recovered from a disappointing first dive to record a score of 460.95 points and hold off Ukranian Illya Kvasha on 434.30 and Mexican Kevin Chavez on 431.55, who took silver and bronze, respectively.

"The other competitors were very strong. I was simply luckier today", the 25-year-old said.

"When I was younger, my coach showed me a video of this pool during the 1992 Olympic Games. It was my dream to compete here and of course to dive well. I was a bit nervous until the fourth dive, but then my coach told me to relax and I made my last two rounds with more confidence."

Li had been heavily favored to retain the title he won on home soil in Shanghai two years ago after also registering the highest score in qualifying on Saturday. However, it was his compatriot Sun Zhiyi who made the early running as he led after the first two rounds.

Li moved into the top three for the first time after his third dive, but his chances of victory looked to be slipping away when a poor fourth attempt saw him slip back to fifth.

The penultimate round though was to prove crucial as the then leader Matthieu Rosset's disastrous attempt saw the Frenchman slip out of contention for a medal and Li followed up with the best dive of the competition so far with an inward two-and-a-half somersault pike that registered an 86.70 from the judges.

And he went one better in the final round with a 87.45 to seal his triumph and China's second gold after Wu Minxia and Shi Tingmao were victorious in the women's synchronized 3m springboard on Saturday.

In a tight final in the Women´s 1m Springboard, He Zi had to compete until the last round to score 307.10 and have a lead over Tania Cagnotto (307.00 points). Bronze was awarded to Han Wang (297.75 points).

The 24th of July will be dedicated to the preparations of the finals for the Women’s 10m Platform. The preliminaries start at 10am and the semifinals at 2pm.

FACTS & FIGURES

Review Diving Men’s 3m Synchro Springboard

Reigning Olympic champion Qin Kai (CHN) wins his fourth consecutive World Championship title in this event. In 2007 and 2009, he claimed gold alongside Wang Feng (CHN), in 2011 alongside Luo Yutong (CHN) and now with his new partner He Chong (CHN).

Qin Kai now has won this event a record four times. Former partner Wang Feng is on three gold medals. Besides his 2007 and 2009 titles, Wang Feng also won gold in 2005, when he formed a duo with He Chong (CHN).

Qin Kai is the first Chinese diver with four gold medals at a certain World Championships event.

Qin Kai (4 gold medals) and Wang Feng (3 gold and 1 silver) are the most decorated divers in this event at the World Championships.

Ilia Zakharov (RUS) and Evgeny Kuznetsov (RUS) reclaimed their silver medal. At the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai, China, they finished second behind Qin Kai and Luo Yutong.

At the 2012 Olympic Games, Ilia Zakharov and Evgeny Kuznetsov also became runners-up, with Qin Kai and Luo Yutong claiming the Olympic gold medal.

Jahir Ocampo (MEX) and Rommel Pacheco (MEX) won the bronze medal. In 2011, Mexico also finished third, as Yahel Castillo (MEX) and Julián Sánchez (MEX) took bronze.

Women’s 1m Springboard

He Zi (CHN) wins her second gold medal in this event, six years after her first in 2007.

She joins Blythe Hartley (CAN) and Irina Lashko (RUS) as only women with two golds in this event.

Wu Minxia (CHN) is the only athlete to have won medals in this event over a longer period of time: 2001 (silver) - 2005 (silver) - 2009 (silver).

China has now won this event in five of the 10 editions.

This was China's 60th gold medal in all diving events at World Championships.

Wang Han (CHN) took bronze. This was her third medal in this event. Only Hartley (4) has more.

Tania Cagnotto (ITA, silver) won her second medal in this event after a bronze in 2011.

Cagnotto has now won two medals in three events: 1m Springboard (silver, bronze) - 3m Springboard Synchronised (silver, silver), 3m Springboard (bronze, bronze, bronze).

The points difference of 0.10 between He Zi (307.10) and Tania Cagnotto (307.00) is the smallest winning margin in any diving event in WCh history.

陈若琳 Chen Roulin and 司雅杰 Si Yajie of China, Ukrainian Iuliia Prokopchuk takes the bronze at the Women's 10m platform event

The Chinese diver Si Yajie, at just 14 years of age, overtook her compatriot Chen Roulin and took away her chance of retaining her world champion title in the women´s 10 m platform event. In third place came the Ukrainian Iuliia Prokopchuk that has become established as a new promising star in the 15th FINA World Championships

Chen´s serious face during the press conference said it all. Today was her chance to become the second woman with multiple gold medals in the World Championships but the fourth round changed everything. She took a risk performing a backward crouched dive with three and a half turns that she "had only practiced once since arriving in Barcelona"- as she confessed in the press conference – and the judges scored her 59.40 which lowered her score and the possibility to get that so-desired title. It was in this very same round that Prokopchuk pulled off her best execution and jumped up to third position. Si Yajie was the most consistent and from the second round held the first place on the podium.

The total scores were: Si Yajie 392.15 points, Chen Roulin 388.70 points and Iuliia Prokopchuk 358.40 points. An exciting final, with great surprises that has left the Britain Sarah Barrow off the individual podium that she was hoping to reach for the first time in Barcelona 2013.

Si Yajie climbed up to the 10 m platform for the first time on an international scale in the Rostock Grand Prix in Germany in 2011 and two years later, in the same place, she came first. Her coach Zhang Ting commented "she has worked a lot to get here" and today´s results are the best proof of it. The diver recognised that there were mistakes in some of her dives but "apart from that I am satisfied with my execution. At this moment, I´m happy".

The case of Iuliia Prokopchuk is similar. In Shanghai 2011 she came sixth in the same event and two years later captured the bronze, assuring that she would stay close to the Chinese. "I´m really happy. I still can´t believe it. I don´t have words for what has just happened" she declared just after hearing the result.

Accepting her second place Chen Roulin commented "in a competition sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. No one can always be at the top".

With these two new medals, China maintains first place on the medal table with a total of 12: 6 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze.

The seventh day of the competition in the Montjuïc Municipal Swimming Pool will host the preliminaries (10:00 – 12:06) and semi finals (14:00 – 15.48) of women´s 3m springboard and last in the day, the highly anticipated final of men´s 3m springboard (17:30 – 19:00).
