2000 Indian Trawlers intrude into Sri Lanka waters every month – SL Tamils

Mrs. Imelda Sukumar, the Government Agent of the Jaffna District has pointed out to Ranjan Mathai, Indian Foreign Secretary when he visited Jaffna that approximately 2000 Indian trawlers intrude into Sri Lankan coastal boundary Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) every month.

She told of the sufferings of the Tamil Fishermen in the Jaffna peninsula because of the illegal fishing done by the Tamil Nadu fishermen within the territorial waters of Sri Lanka.

The Government Agent of Jaffna brought to the notice of the Indian Foreign Secretary that two Indian trawlers joint together and entangles a large net to capture more fish from Point Pedro area. She also said that daily Jaffna fishermen are affected by the intrusion of Indian trawlers.

She has told that monofilament trawling method is banned in Sri Lanka but Indian fishermen are using the same trawlers in the Sri Lankan waters.

Sri Lanka’s chief administrative officer for the Jaffna district Mrs. Imelda Sukumar explained to Indian Foreign Secretary that because Indian Fishermen uses the monofilament trawling method causes severe damages to valuable coral resources, reduces the local fish production, and causes injuries and death to Jaffna fishermen.
