200 Filipino fishermen arrested in Indonesia

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed on Sunday that some 200 Filipino fishermen are among those arrested in Indonesia.

DFA spokesman Charles Jose said the Filipinos are among 463 fishermen from over 150 boats caught allegedly illegally fishing in the waters of Indonesia.

Jose said the Philippine consulate will visit the arrested Filipinos in Birau, West Kalimantan, where they are being held.

They are said to be residents of Birau, but are originally from Bongao, Tawi-Tawi.

The Indonesian immigration chief had said the crackdown began early this month because of the rising number of fishermen from nearby countries illegally fishing in their territory.

The Indonesian government said illegal fishing costs their nation around $25 billion a year.

judging that they're from tawi tawi and must have been fishing there multiple times, where was it they where caught actually?

imo, indonesia, phil, malaysia, brunie should have an agreement to patrol that specific area together , instead of doing it separately. A lot of illegal activities been going down there, human and drug trafficking to name a few.

As for the arrested fisherman, well sadly, they intruded into Indonesia's territory so it is just that they will be arrested by Indonesian authorities.
