With a Sukhoi-30 fighter aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF) crashing near Pune this week, Five Sukhois have crashed since 2009,
Taking to 394 planes of various types that have been lost by the IAF over the last 20 years.
While 151 IAF pilots have lost their lives during the last decade, deaths have declined sharply over the years, from 17 in 1999 to zero in 2012.
As many as 198 MiG aircraft—often dubbed “flying coffins” by pilots—of different variants have crashed over the last 20 years.
The MIG-21 aircraft was the first supersonic jet inducted in 1964 by the IAF and is in use since then.MIG-21s will be in use till 2018, until the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA)Tejas is commissioned.
As regards helicopters, the Cheetah SA-315, built by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has reported 24 crashes.
Next is the Russian-built MI-17 with 15 crash incidents, followed by the Chetak with 14 cases.
This year, there have been five IAF aircraft crashes:
*July 25 ,2014: ‘Dhruv’ of the Indian Air Force helicopter crashed in a village in Sitapur district, barely 35 km from Lucknow, killing all seven occupants, including the pilot and co-pilot.
* May 27, 2014: MiG-21on May 27 crashed in Jammu & Kashmir,leading to the pilot’s death.
* March 28, 2014: A C-130J Super
Hercules Special Operations transport aircraft crashes while on a tactical training mission, killing five crew members on board.
* Jan 22, 2014: A Jaguar combat jet
crashes near Bholasar village in
Rajasthan's Bikaner district. The pilot and co-pilot eject safely. According to the defence ministry, the pilots detected a technical problem while landing at Nal airport in Bikaner and ejected.
* Nov 8, 2013: A MiG-29 crashes near Jamnagar in Gujarat but the pilot ejects safely. The aircraft was on a routine sortie from the Jamnagar airbase.
* July 15, 2013: A MiG-21 Bison
crashes while landing at Uttarlai
airbase in Rajasthan's Barmer district,killing the pilot. The aircraft had taken off from the airbase on a
routine training sortie and crashed
while landing.
* June 25, 2013: Twenty people were
killed when a MI-17-V5 helicopter
crashes while ferrying rescue personnel in the wake of the Uttarakhand floods.
*June 7, 2013: A MiG-21 crashes in
Rajasthan's Barmer district, with the
pilot ejecting safely. The aircraft had
taken off from the Uttarlai airbase
and was on a routine sortie. It
crashed 40 km from Barmer.
* Feb 19, 2013: A Sukhoi SU-30
combat jet crashes in Rajasthan's
Jaisalmer district; both pilots eject
safely.
* Feb 12, 2013: A MiG-27 aircraft
crashes in Rajasthan's Barmer district but the pilot ejects safely. The aircraft was on a routine training sortie when it crashed near Allawani Ki Dhani after taking off from Uttarlai airbase.
A total of 151 pilots and co-pilots have lost
their lives in 20 years.
