MIDNAPORE/RANCHI: Two security personnel and a Maoist were killed and a CRPF assistant commandant was among two injured in separate encounters in West Bengal and neighbouring Jharkhand on Saturady.

A TOI report from Midnapore said precision weapons procured from Israel were used by security forces for the first time in Maoist badlands of West Bengal on Saturday during an overnight gunbattle with rebels.
The firing that lasted for over three hours resulted in two casualties — a CRPF man from Manipur and an alleged Maoist cadre both in their twenties.

The Maoist-backed PCPA, however, claimed the alleged Maoist was a villager. PCPA has called a 48-hour bandh in protest against the killing from Sunday.

Security forces made a move towards the area at 3am on Saturday after getting leads that a Maoist leader, Sasadhar Mahato, and his wife Suchitra, were camping in the village.
