Two suspected Rohingya drug peddlers were killed in a “gunfight” with the members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s bazar early today.

Deceased Mohammad Yunus, 21, and Mohammad Jamal, 27, hailed from Shikdarpara village in Mongdu district of Myanmar, our Cox’s Bazar correspondent reports quoting BGB officials.

On information that a group of armed drug peddlers along with huge number of drugs were staying in Jaliapara area adjacent to the Naf River in Hnila union, a team of BGB cordoned off the area, BGB-2 Battalion Captain Lt Cornel Mohammad Faisal Hasan Khan told The Daily Star.

Sensing presence of the BGB troops, the alleged drug dealers opened fire targeting the border security guards, forcing them to fire, triggering a “gunfight”, added the BGB official.

After the “gun battle”, BGB personnel found two-bullet hit persons lying on the ground and sent them to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex. Later, they were shifted to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital where the duo succumbed, said Lt Col Mohammad Faisal.

BGB officials recovered 50,000 yaba pills, two rifles, ammunitions and machetes from the spot.
