For a long long time, 1990-2013/14, the usual pattern of an encounter would involve a seige of the target house by IA/JK SOG/CRPF followed by room intervention drills. Operations would be slow, running into multiple days and militants would have reasonable chance of inflicting casualties on Indian forces, as also of escaping the cordon given the ponderous response. It would also tie down entire batallions ir even brigades for days on end. Worst of all though, the militants who survived the seiges would quickly become veterans at such combat and able to transfer skills to next batches.

After 2014 though, and possibly even earlier, the IA changed it's modus operandi and simply began blowing up the houses as early as was possible. This dramatically reduced caualties of own troops during encounters and also freeded up the forces much more quicker.

It also had a demoralizing impact on the militants as they suddenly realized that they had no real chance of inflicting casualties and frustrating forces in long drawn out encounters. (The majority of casualties now are in initial phases of operations while establishing contact) Anger, frustration and fear among militants climbed, as is evident from communications intercept.
