Srinagar: At least two soldiers and two terrorists were killed in an encounter at Handwara in Kupwara district of north Kashmir, army said on Friday.

The encounter broke out in Laribal village of Zachaldara in Handwara after security forces launched an operation, an army officer said.

In the ensuing gunbattle, two unidentified terrorists and two soldiers were killed so far. The operation is still in progress as there were inputs about the presence of other terrorists in the area, the officer added.

The encounter comes at a time when India and Pakistan on Thursday agreed to maintain peace along the border. Both the sides agreed to open more channels of communication in an effort to take the strained relationship forward.

Both countries on Thursday began a three-day DG-level border dialogue. A 16-member Pakistani delegation on Thursday reached the BSF headquarters for the talks that are being held between after a gap of over one-and-a-half years.

The meeting between the Rangers and the BSF was one of the three key meetings agreed upon between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his counterpart Nawaz Sharif when they met in Ufa in Russia in July.

Baramulla, September 11: Three militants and two soldiers have reportedly been killed in an overnight gunfight in Rajwar forests of the neighboring Kupwara district.

Special Operations Group (SOG) of police and army’s 21 RR laid a siege around Laribal area of the dense Rajwar forest range in Handwara on Thursday night following specific inputs suggesting the presence of a heavily armed group of militants, official sources told Kashmir Reader today. When the joint team zeroed in, the militants, believed to be 4-5 in numbers opened heavy gunfire upon them to break the cordon.

“SOG and army men returned the fire triggering off a gun-battle. In the ensuing encounter that continued intermittently throughout the night, 3 militants and two soldiers of 21 RR were killed,” sources said.

Sources said that the encounter was still going on in the forests, where additional reinforcements have been rushed. More details emerging

This seems to be common problem in Kashmir, India can keep it secure for the most part but with iron fist. It means the locals aren't content with Indian rule and prefer a sovereign state to their own. Because it looks to me like organized operations through consistent manner, unless Kashmir is lawless and it's easy for armed groups to form...

All the news I'm seeing is random clash/ambush which on some days sees losses from side, others on other side, and other days losses on both sides. It appears to be a common occurence, not every time are militants able to inflict losses though. But I don't notice any thing tipping off about them mate.

I am not aware of India intelligence methods, or if it is able to recruit human resources. I'm rather focusing on the trend being seen here, the militants also happen to be local Kashmiri's(am I correct?), hence there is inclination towards armed resistance which is occurring on common basis. There is dispute regarding Indian adminstraton of their regions, it's pretty clear. And had Pakistan been adminstrating the same regions I am sure they would face similiar problems. Just to clear that out of the way if you thought I am making case in favor of Pakistan.

Just as there are Kashmiris who pick up weapon against Indian state there are others who help the state with intelligence. There is no denying that such encounters are getting more frequent in past few months and local boys are again joining these militant groups but there number is still low. the ranks of these militants are still dominated by Pakistani Punjabis not local Kashmiri.

Sir, you cannot make everyone happy..therr will alwaz be a small segment of population who opposes you...its true in evrywher in world..whats problem in kashmir is neighbouring nation brainwashing and arming those disgrunted youth...when you don't get those support, such resistance die out...you can see that in North East India as well as in North western part of pakistan.... so neighbours has to act more responsibly..
