Two Sylhet youths, detained allegedly for hurting religious sentiments through their Facebook postings, have been sent to jail.
Police detained Partha Das Pappu, 20, and Bijoy Chandra, 21, on Wednesday morning. The detainees insisted they did not post the remarks for which they had been picked up.
"Police detained the two for allegedly defamatory Facebook postings on Prophet Muhammad which had led to tension in the area, Biswanath Police Station OC Abul Kalam Azad had said.
Superintendent of Sylhet Police Shakhawat Hossain said Pappu and Chandra were interrogated by police detectives and were later sent to jail under Section 54 through a court.
Police are looking into the matter. Legal actions will be taken against them after investigations, he said.
Police detained the two from Boiragibazar. They are cousins and hail from Kathliparha.
SP Hossain said the two denied having posted the controversial remarks on the social network.
