Five men, including two Chinese nationals, were arrested and a drone camera — which they were allegedly using to make videos of the newly constructed Islamabad International Airport — was shot down on Wednesday, sources within the Airport Security Force (ASF) said.

ASF sources said the arrested men were workers of a Chinese company involved in construction of the airport and were making the drone footage without permission.

The drone, destroyed as a result of firing, was also taken into custody by ASF officials.

Following a number of controversies and delays, the new airport — built on the outskirts of federal capital — is now set to begin flight operations from May 3. The first test flight landed at the airport earlier this month.

In its initial phase, the airport will be capable of handling nine million passengers and 50,000 tonnes of cargo every year. After its expansion, it would be able to serve up to 25m passengers a year by 2025, authorities say.

This is a developing story that is being updated as the situation evolves. Initial reports in the media can sometimes be inaccurate. We will strive to ensure timeliness and accuracy by relying on credible sources such as concerned, qualified authorities and our staff reporters.

Why we people love to make things difficult, these are workers who were part of group who build airport.....every one wants to see his beautiful creation but they should have taken permission before shooting the video....

Warn them and release them ASAP.

Using drone in close proximity of an airport is an offence and poses a serious risk to the flights. Good job by ASF. But I hope the offenders are released after a warning and a promise of not doing again.

No country in the world allows individuals to hover their drones above Airport especially newly made. Airport is considered as sensitive location.

There are some universal rules regarding personal drones which am mentioning below.

  1. Fly at or below 400 feet and remain clear of surrounding obstacles.
  2. Keep the aircraft within visual line of sight at all times.
  3. Remain well clear of and do not interfere with manned aircraft operations.
  4. Don't fly within five miles of an airport unless you contact the airport operator and control tower (if operating at a tower controlled airport) before flying.
  5. Don't fly near people or stadiums.
  6. Don't fly an aircraft that weighs 55 pounds or more.

These rules apply only when airport become operational.

Rules are rules - they apply to everyone equally. Flying drones near airports is dangerous.
