The Power Division is likely to finalise a $2.76b plan to generate 500 mega watts of solar power by 2015 through both commercial and social projects.

The plan will be placed before prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who is also the minister for power, energy and mineral resources, for her approval, said a Power Division official.

He said, ‘Since the Asian Development Bank has back-tracked on its plan for funding the projects through a combination of grants and soft loans, the government will now implement the projects involving different funding agencies and routes including private entrepreneurs.’

According to the plan, around $1.77b investment will be required for generating 340 MW power in commercial projects and $1.0b will be required for generating 160 MW in social projects.

The commercial ventures involve solar plants which will provide 150 MW of power for irrigation, solar parks which will supply 145 MW of power to the national grid, and a solar power mini grid which will provide 25 MW of power to rural consumers.

In addition, 30 MW will be generated in commercial and residential buildings and industries.

The official said that the government would need to provide a huge amount in subsidy, even more than what is given in power purchase from diesel-run rental plants for the national grid.

In the social projects, a total of 50 MW of power will be generated in the rural health centres by the health ministry, 40 MW will be generated in remote educational institutions by the education ministry, 41 MW of power in government offices by the public works department, 12 MW of power in religious establishments by the religious affairs ministry, 10 MW of power at remote railway stations by the railway department and seven MW of power at union information centres under the local government division.

The government will also give support to the implementing agencies -- both in the public and private sectors – by providing fiscal incentives for project investors and operators, exempting certain technology and equipment from import duty, land acquisition and other institutional support, the official said.

The government so far has been able to generate 55 MW of non-grid solar based power.

Another 35 MW of non-grid solar based power generation plants are in the pipeline for implementation, it was learnt.

wish Bangladesh all the best for this new venture. The Indian power sector is taking a beating these days.

BTW,has any location been decided? One needs flat land with lots of sunlight to make solar power generation profitable.
Here in India,we have most of our solar power projects in Rajasthan,it gets a lot of sunlight, with clear skies.

Can Awami regime arrange fund for $2.76 (without supplier credit)? With obvious answer another project profile just for public consumption and will bite the dust.

This is a idiotic idea of providing subsidies for solar plant for a poor country like us. Bring on the coal idiots...

It's best that govt should use the funding on more low cost sources like coal or natural gas(whichever is found in bangladesh) maybe even biodiesel
If you have extra money then get solar for your own house
Although congratz bangladesh

Coal is the best energy source.

I wonder what's going on in that idiot Hasina's head. Making herself look more green? Does she know that solar power requires a lot of land? Having solar panels on rooftops is a good idea though.

Renewable energy is still a luxury for the rich nations. Where the hell is the gas and coal? Oh no that would cause CO2 emissions lets be environment friendly, does nt matter if we go bankrupt in the process. If they expect poor people from the rural areas of bangladesh to pay 4x the price of conventional electricity because its "green", then i dont know what to say. What the hell is going on with our government?

Rich nations are not giving us the money they promised, but we are spending $$$ on green projects to be environment friendly. Tell me, who is paying for this CO2 based global warming boogey man theory?

Bangladesh has 2500 million tonnes lying under the soil in its NW. This is equivalent to more than 90 trillion cft of natural gas. Compare this with our probable gas reserve of less than 20- trillion cft. Coal should be extracted to power the next phase of development. Now, after a new international airport, 1st Padma and 2nd Padma bridge and many other similar projects, this lunatic SH is coming with another pet project namely soalr power that will never really light one single valve in the country. SH is the modern version of Muhammad Tughlak of Delhi.

Instead of spending 2.76 billion dollars on a single plant, it could have better spend the money on manufacturing/importing rechargeable emergency light/fan running on solar energy which could be then distributed to BDs free or cost or at a nominal rate. That could have solved the power problem of the country much faster.

Already manufacturing and have been distributed, I have one in my bathroom!!:D

Nope. And they are expensive due to the duties imposed by government.

What can I say? Your Govt is crazy..in India its distributed under subsidy. Same for solar cooker, smokeless ovens etc. Very soon in my city the local corporation is planning to distribute bio gas plants under subsidy so that every household can process their kitchen waste in their own backyard reducing the strain on Govt to process the waste generated.
