Beijing, March 12 (IANS) At least 19 people were killed Saturday when an explosion occurred in a coal mine in southwest China, authorities said.

The gas blast hit the Xincheng coal mine in Panxian county of Guizhou province when 34 people were working underground, Xinhua reported.

Nineteen bodies were recovered, while 15 miners managed to escape, a statement said.

China has appalling Mine Safety Record. More people die in Chinese mines, than all the mines combined in the world. Sad state of affair. And absolutely nothing is being done to change this track record.

China's coal mine safety problems are really very bad.
The reason is China's coal mines is to allow private operators, And state-run mine(for example, the iron) safety is good.

Any equipment can not control of greedy capitalists.
State enterprises can enforce safety work. But it is difficult to manage private enterprises.

This is what happens in capitalism. Where are the far right advocates of the free market when they result in deaths, while state owned mines have far better safety records?

It doesn't happen in capitalism mate. Look at the safety record of Australia, America, Canada, South Africa heck even India. I am in the mining industry and have interacted with Chinese mining engineers. Apparently many of these privately operated coal mines supply coal to power stations. So if the Chinese authority were serious about fixing this problem they could within a matter of month. You just needer stricter OHS regulations and strict mine inspectors.

Many of the mines that operate in China, would have to be shut down, if the OHS and risk assessment standards of say Australia is applied to them. Unfortunately in this dash to development its the mine worker that ends up dead. I hope and believe the Chinese government will do something about it soon.
