18 Times Sam Manekshaw Showed He Was The Most Badass Army General Ever

Confused. How so?
Because that was our weak time and we had thousands of POWS in indian custody. If indira wanted she was able to demand something in writing from us like declaring kashmiri LOC as permanent border in return for freeing pakistani POW,s but she did not.Bhutto was a intelligent man and he tricked and fooled indira.
Now indian think tanks are themselves admitting that they played the 1971 game successfully but they made the kashmir insurgency a never ending issue and even after 49 years its costing indians dearly.
There was an anecdote that his son became PoW in 65 war. Yahya Khan came to know about it and he sent a message to Sam that his son can be freed immediately if he wants.

Sam replied. They are all my sons. You will free all of them together.
How ill informed you indians are about your own military affairs. That was field marshal cappoera not sam manekshaw.Manekshaw had no son,he only had two daughters.

.
I'd second @Indus Pakistan here that Pakistani army was outnumbered 1 to 10. There was no way in hell that Pakistan could have survived that onslaught by Bangalis and Indian army when Chinese chickened out as usual and USA wasn't ready to help us militarily.

He must be a very good planner and strategist but if he is being considered a badass only because of 1971 war, i believe this is over hyped.

Please note. It is fundamental right of POWs to be repatriated sans any condition by the 'detaining power' that is in this case India. In laymans language Indira Gandhi was required by Geneva Convention and international law as agreed by United Nations to return the POWs as soon as hostilities ceased. In other words Indira Gandhi did not fo a favour and Bhutto did not score stroke of genius. Of course our ignorant public were fed that and lapped it up like dogs which of course Bhutto nurtured to build his own ego. Please read this extract of the Geneva Convention which India is signatory to and which covers every single thing about POWs in very long detail. It is over 700 page document. Please read section C., para 1.

C. Interfiretation of the provision. -It is understood that the following rules presuppose that the Convention as a whole has been applied to the letter and in spirit by the belligerents, particularly as regards the co-operation of the Protecting Powers and scrutiny by them, in accordance with Articles 8 and 10 of the Convention. On this basis, Article 118, paragraph 1, may be interpreted as follows :

1. Prisoners of war have an inalienable right to be repatriated once active hostilities have ceased. In parallel, and s~bject to the remarks below (sub-paragraph 3), it is the duty of the Detaining Power to carry out repatriation and to provide the necessary means for it to take place.

In calling for the general repatriation of all prisoners of war once active hostilities have ceased, the 1949 Diplomatic Conference took account of the experience of the Second World War.

Quote out of the horses's mouth -

"I had almost 15:1 advantage; they had no chance but they fought very gallantly."

My bad. It was Karriapa

In those old days geneva convention was not followed properly and both sides tortured, killed or disappeared POW,s.So if indira wanted ,she was able to keep those POW,s in jails for a long time. She could open war crimes against them and drag them into military and civil courts.Just like geneva convention simply did not apply to german POW,s after WW2.
we should give him credit for speaking truth
Yes that,s the reason i am praising that guy.He is a thorough gentleman.
It,s a well known fact he did not like indira gandhi and both had a tussle when he realized indira is using army for her political gains.Well at the end of the day he had to send his army into east pakistan and follow orders of PM.This guy deserves a praise not because of 1971 war ,he deserves it if we read about him and how he spent his whole life as a military commander.

. .
Don't be silly. It's been in force before even World War 2. What you think India would have kept 65,000 soldiers and 20,000 in gross violation of the Genevan Convention without international and UN pressure permanently?
Now once again you are forcing me to get angry on you because you are arguing unnecessary.I believe you are some mature old man with some grey hair on his head but i am not going to respect those grey hairs if there is no wisdom behind them.
As i said earlier making some law is one thing but practicing that law is another thing. If you are not living under some stone then you should know the so called geneva convention is still violated and specially during those times violating it was a norm for india and pakistan.
We all know genocide happened during 1971 war and it was super easy for indira to open some war crime cases against pakistani soldiers and keep them in custody for a long long time. But it did not happen and that,s why manekshaw said "bhutto has made a monkey out of you".Period.....

.
Whoever he was one soldier does not represent all army..We too had such scums like the one who hijacked pilot officer minhas jet.

yup agree he probably never met our pathans

Yes 1971 was not just manekshaws effort it was a bigger game played by superpowers. He just happened to be a army chief that time. But overall if you look at all his lifetime he was a extra ordinary military commander. He fought more than 4 wars. And always acted like a soldier in honour and dignity. That bitch indira involved him in this 1971 war and used the army for her own benefit just like modi is using army these days.He just did his duty and did it in a very professional manner. He kept his word and gave protection to all army personals of east pakistan army.He even visited their POW camps and took strict notice of their living conditions and ordered his army to give them the same food they are eating.Soon after a war ended and he got retired that bitch indira stopped his pension. And they stopped his salary for nearly 30 years.A year before he died a government of india handed him over a check over 1 crore rupees but still very unfair and he was not happy for what they did to him.On his funeral no ministers, defence officials and people from the government paid a visit. It was just a small ceremony for a field marshal was the finest military commander of india.I am a pakistani but it even makes me sad how india treats it,s war heroes and gems of the nation.
Pathans were never enslaved by the British.

Overhyped. Only two things mark him out. He was a Parsee and he managed to defeat a isolated Pakistan Army [1,200 miles from home] force with help of most of Bangla population, Bangla Mukhti Bahini with a advantage of 15 to one. Even a girl student from a high school would have won with that sort of odds in her favour.
Let's not forget the Soviets were involved also. Most of the credit goes to them.

.
As for 1971, the Soviets were intricately involved in all phases of the campaign - logistics, armaments, planning, intelligence, diplomacy etc.!! It was a multi national JV to “undo” Pak - the largest Muslim State of the time!!! All played their roles accordingly....

As for India, everything went in her favor...

As for Pak, everything went against her....

Anyway, thanks to Manekshaw, Pak has got ridden of the “cry baby”....
We got back at Soviets pretty damn hard... ;)

You need balls to disagree with Indira gandhi.
First produce a PM who can disagree with your Military establishment , winning or losing comes later.

On top of that when partition happened ,a isolated land thousands of miles away were made part of pakistan. With not enough size and resources of its own to defend itself.Sooner or later it was doomed to fail.
On top of that the west pakistan administration made some grave mistakes.Though if we had a nuclear deterrence at that time(a wet dream of many in 1971,pakistan had no chance ) we were able to hold and control east pakistan just like USA is controlling a isolated land of alaska.
