18 States Opt For AP Fiber Grid Model
I
Instead of NOFN model, 18 states have opted for AP Fiber Grid Model to establish a highly scalable network infrastructure to provide on demand, affordable and end-to-end broadband connectivity of 10 to 20 Mbps per household.
Speaking at the 11th National e-Governance & Digital Summit, Aruna Sundarajan, administrator, USOF and CMD, BharatNet said, “18 states have taken lead. NOFN has been expanded and now it is aiming to provide 10-15 Mbps per household vis-a-vis 100 Mbps to gram panchayat.
The states which have opted for AP Fiber Grid Model are: Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Orissa, Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Gujarat and West Bengal.
According to industry experts, the states which are active for AP Fiber Grid Model are Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. These states are talking to industry experts on design architecture with respect to State Fiber Grid Model.
Concieved by government of Andhra Pradesh, AP Fiber Grid Project plans to establish a highly scalable network infrastructure to provide on demand, affordable and end-to-end broadband connectivity of 10 to 20 Mbps for all households and 1 to 10 Gbps for all institutions and multi-dwelling units by 2018, in partnership with government of India and private sector.
In case of Andhra Pradesh, the fiber will be laid overhead using the network of electricity poles across the state so that state, district, zonal and mandals are connected with each other using ring topology as much as possible and approximate length of fiber is around 22,500 Km.
In addition, the last mile connectivity will be made available through a network of local cable operators that have the capability to provide bandwidth. Optical fiber shall be laid by the contractor primarily along the electrical pole network under the control of EPDCL and SPDCL.
AP Fiber Grid scope of work includes: Verification and optimization of routes designed based on GIS survey; laying of the fiber network; creating requisite number of points of presence (PoPs); supplying and installation of networking equipment; setting up network operating center (NOC) at central location; implementing OSS and BSS software; setting up cable TV headend; and operations & maintenance of fiber network for one year after going live.

Tamil Nadu Moves Andhra Pradesh Way; To Invest Rs 3,000 Cr For Rural Broadband
Tamil Nadu (TN) has become the second state after Andhra Pradesh to form a new company called Tamil Nadu FibreNet Corporation on the lines of AP Fiber Grid to provide rural broadband connections to all households.
As part of project implementation, PoP would be created at the state, district and mandal level. The objectives of the PoPs would be to enable the customers/ecosystem partners like local cable operators to have easy access to the network. A total of 2,449 PoPs is to be created across the state.
Cisco Partner, Tera Software To Bag AP Fiber Grid Project - TeleAnalysis : TeleAnalysis
For AP Fiber Grid Project, Tera Software bid Rs 320 crore, followed by Pace Systems at Rs 335 crore and Sterlite at Rs 600 crore. Both Tera Software and Sterlite had Cisco as its technology partner whereas Pace Systems had Alcatel-Lucent as its partner.
Tera Software intends to create overhead fiber network across Andhra Pradesh state. The fiber will be laid overhead using the network of electricity poles across the state so that state, district, zonal and mandals are connected with each other using ring topology as much as possible and approximate length of fiber is around 22,500 Km.

The PoP infrastructure would have passive fiber termination equipment, electronics equipment and related infrastructure, power provisioning including grid power and backup power and other cabling and minor civil works to be executed by the vendor.
At a later date, government of Andhra Pradesh will focus on Phase-II of the project which involves laying of underground optic fiber Network across the state under National Optic Fiber Network (NOFN) or Bharat Net scheme of government of India. Once phase-II project is implemented phase-I project will work as extended network as well as back up network for Phase-II.
