17 dead, over 100 injured in Bangladesh train crash

October 23, 2023

At least 17 people have been killed and 100 others injured in Bangladesh after two trains collided on Monday, with officials saying they fear the death toll will rise.

The crash in the eastern city of Bhairab saw a freight train smash into a passenger train travelling in the opposite direction, derailing two passenger carriages, officials said.

“We have recovered 17 bodies. More than 100 people were injured,” Sadiqur Rahman, a government administrator in Bhairab told AFP, which lies around 60 kilometres (38 miles) northeast of the capital Dhaka.

“The death toll will rise,” Rahman said, with rescuers reporting they could still see bodies crushed and trapped under overturned coaches.

“A rescue train carrying cranes is on its way,” he said.

Local residents and volunteers rushed to the scene after the accident took place at around 4pm (1000 GMT).

The crash occurred after one train entered the same line as the other, Rahman said.

Video footage broadcast by the private Channel 24 showed hundreds of people crowding the accident site with many in tears as they searched for relatives.

“We have rescued at least two people alive from the overturned coaches,” Nazmul Haque, a Red Crescent volunteer, told reporters.

Officials said fire service, police and the elite Rapid Action Battalion security force were at the crash site.

Bangladesh authorities have ordered two investigations into the accident, and appeals have been made for volunteers to donate blood.

Nazmul Islam, a general manager of the state-run Bangladesh Railway, which owns the train, told local media the freight train overshot its signal.

Train accidents are common in Bangladesh and are often caused by poor signalling, negligence, old tracks or other rundown infrastructure.

How the hell does this happen in this day and age.

I hope capital punishment is meted out to those responsible.

Sheer negligence on the part of the signalling staff.

Death sentence is the only deterrence.

No words can express the sorrow for the dead and their families. Especially if they were the main income source for the family.

At least 17 people were killed when a passenger train and a freight train collided outside Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka, during a busy holiday season.

The accident, in the Kishoreganj district, 45 miles east of the capital, also left over a 100 others wounded, officials said.

These things can happen only in countries like BD where systems are not created to avert such mishaps.

Yes!

In societies where people do not take their duties seriously!

signalling staff responsible for this tragedy must face the death penalty.

In BD signaling staffs have every right to sip tea and gossip not watching two opposite moving trains may collapse.

Nothing on this Earth moves without the express permission of God. Train accidents? So what? How can we small human being stop the wishes of God?

Well, is this not our philosophy? We think this way and our God gets happy.

I don't think the signalling staff will face the death penalty. Because if he gives slogan "Joy Bangla", "Joy Bangabandhu", Hasina will forgive him:P

Oh! Dear god! You cannot help yourself, can you?

Everything must be party political with you lot!

It’s like this sort of tragedy has only happened under BAL!

You lot really are hopeless scum of this world!

Who will want a job in which they can be punished by death penalty for an accident.

Two trains colliding head on is not an “accident”.

It is due to human negligence!

Anyway, if this job comes with the threat of a death penalty - we will only get the most competent and courageous applying.

Threat of premature death doesn’t stop people applying to join the military?

Maybe we will end up only hiring ex military personnel for these roles?

Nationalist Bangladeshi, you are still using the signaling system left by the British in 1947.

So, when are you going to request India or China to re-do it or modernize it? Golden BD people spend16 hours on prayer mats. They do not have the knowledge or the time or will force to learn Western technologies.

So, BD govt should ask our friendly countries to change the wire-pulling signaling system to an electronics one whereby two trains automatically stop when at some distance.

As far as I understand, your new Maulana friend in the PDF or the Rly minister himself has no idea what I am talking here.

After all, our country is known as Golden Bangladesh!!

Yes! Signalling should ofcourse be fully automated.

But in the meantime - human negligence cannot be tolerated.

I bet your hunch about sipping tea in a tea stall is close to the truth!

Please do include your beloved aunty Hasina to the list of scums of this world because she sees Zia as the mastermind behind Mujib's killing. The whole world knows that Colonel Shariar, Major Dalim etal were the masterminds behind Mujib's killing. She is a compulsive liar and a stain on our society.

Who will want a job in which they can be punished by death penalty for an accident.

There was a suicidal pilot in Washington state yesterday who was sitting in the cockpit who pulled an overhead emergency handle to stop one of the engines.

The plane had taken off from Seattle, but they subdued him mid-flight (when this happened) and the airplane landed in Portland.

Now this pilot faces 83 counts of murder, each one of which carries a lifetime sentence. He is lucky that the US abolished the death penalty.

These people in Bangladesh (loco driver of the colliding train) are being made an example of - because their job also carries the threat of a life or death scenario.

This is only fair to the victims who got hurt and lost their loved ones out of dereliction of duty by railway personnel.

They are collectively responsible for the death of at least 17 people (death counts which are sure to go up). They should at least get lifetime sentences. They willingly ignored red signals which told them to stop. Sheer negligence which will have consequences including criminal ones.

Railway employee idiots do not take their jobs seriously enough. This has been a problem and it needs to change.

The entire Railway sector needs to be reformed to make it more efficient and productive. They need to instal reward and punishment system to increase performance.

After writing one of my posts, I started thinking if sipping tea really caused the train accident. I re-read the news and found the time of accident was 4:00 pm BD time.

The news caption:

"Local residents and volunteers rushed to the scene after the accident took place at around 4pm (1000 GMT).
The crash occurred after one train entered the same line as the other, Rahman said".

4:00 pm was Asr time and our devotees making full-hearted long and slow prayers. So, no one seems to be there to keep eyes on the accident possibility.

Now, I believe it was An Act of God, and therefore it was pre-ordained. What can we do????

The crash occurred after one train entered the same line as the other, Rahman said".
