16,000-MW to be added to Bangladesh grid by 2016

The government of Bangladesh has undertaken short, middle and long-term plans to make the country self- reliant in electricity generation including fulfilling the power shortage.

"Various steps have been taken up to implement these plans," State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Mohammad Enamul Haque told the House today in reply to a question from treasury bench member Kazi Keramat Ali.

Under the plans, he said, 15,000-MW electricity would be added to the national grid by 2016 through using liquid fuel, coal, duel fuel and renewable energy.

Considering the gas crisis, he added, gas-based power plants would be set up to raise electricity generation.

The state minister said since assumption of office by the present government, 1556-MW electricity was added to the national grid till May this year.

He said agreements were signed for construction of 41 power plants with a capacity of 4504-MW electricity at public and private levels from January 2009 to May 2011.

Of those, he said, 10 power plants with a capacity of 835-MW electricity have gone into production, while 31 power plants with a capacity of 3669-MW electricity are under construction.

If these plans are executed on time, he said, the intensity of loadshedding would reduce gradually from 2011 and the power production would exceed the demand at the end of 2012.

The state minister expressed the hope that it would be possible to distribute electricity as per the demand by 2013.

As far as I know, Pakistan's installed capacity of power is more than 24,000 mW. Then, how come you have shortage of power?

because people in the upper echelons are fukced up by their money!!!, we have HUGE potential, advanaced feasibility studies and design stage is going on for a 7000MW damm ,and also for 2 4000MW dams, but they will be completed by 2020, 16000 MW by 206, if it happens all i can say is well done bangladesh and go to hell zardari!!!!,,,,,,,,,,,,we have huge shale gas reserves as well.

I think, you have missed one important point why more electricity is needed in BD. Certainly, it lights the houses and streets, but BD needs power to raise invesrtment in industries by the private sector. An industrialist will not invest his money unless he is assured of roads, telephone/fax, Internet, water, gas and POWER. Our industrialization remains behind the target because of of power shortage.

I have doubt about the target date, and I also have doubt about the prospect of arranging enough fuel to feed the power plants. Gas is in short supply, and a very huge quantity (2500 million tonnes) of coal reserves are lying underground untapped. Govt has to secure fuel to run the plants.

As far as I know, Pakistan's installed capacity of power is more than 24,000 mW. Then, how come you have shortage of power?

Capacity is under utilized as most of the IPP's uses imported furnace oil and is in short supply due to high cost and price of electricity is government controlled, so they cannot increase the price of electricity.

Also the Hydel power can fluctuate with peak when the dams are full and then keep on declining. There is always going to be a gap in actual capacity and actual production in power plants it seems.

Power situation has improved beyond belief - in 2006/2007 - there were periods when Dhaka would have 6-7 hours of load shedding a day.

Where I live now, we're lucky to lose power once a week.

But, the big projects have been taking ages to complete and while the govt says, capacity is around 14000MW currently, actual production is the 9000MW listed above for a myriad of reasons.

Yeah, it's not bad...especially when compared with the recent past. But, we're hoping to see a big leap when some of the larger plants go online.

Unfortunately, as you are well aware...these things, along with infrastructure take time and more importantly capital.

Still, electricity has been one of the stand out accomplishments of the current govt.

This is 2016, there was no 16,000 MW added as awami thieves, thugs and cheer leaders here propagated. In the Eid day when there was no office or factory running, most of my neighborhood in Dhaka, was without electricity for most of the day. That is how much liars awami league and their cheerleaders.
