Bagerhat, Mar 28 (UNB) – Members of Bangladesh Navy arrested 15 Indian fishermen for illegally catching fish in the Bay of Bengal under Mongla upazila on Thursday.
Mohammad Aminul Islam, officer-in-charge of Mongla Police Station, said a patrol team of Navy arrested the Indian fishermen along with a trawler ‘FB Prosenjit’ while they were catching fish in the fairway buoy area of the Bangladesh territory violating the maritime boundary law at noon.
They arrested were taken to the Mongal Naval base early Friday and handed over to police in the afternoon.
All the arrested fishermen hail from different villages in Chabbish Pargana and Hugli districts of Paschimbanga.
During preliminary interrogation, the fishermen said they had entered the Bangladesh territory mistakenly, said the OC.
Two separate cases were filed in this connection.
