NEW DELHI: As many as 14,004 farmers committed suicide in 2011 countrywide, the latest report of the National Crime Records Bureau has noted.

The number is lower than the previous year's figure of 15,933 but the dip might be much less considering that Chhattisgarh, which recorded 1,412 farmer suicides in 2010, claimed that there were no farmer suicides at all in the state in 2011.

As always, Maharashtra fared the worst, with 3,337 farmers committing suicide in 2011. This is worse than the previous year when the state recorded 3,141 deaths. The numbers show an abysmal story of how the special packages for the non-irrigated, chronically drought-prone areas such as Bundelkhand and Vidarbha seem to have delivered little to the most needy.

Overall, the figures for the period between 2004-2011 do show a declining trend in farmer suicides with the peak recorded in 2004 at 18,241. The total number of farmers who committed suicide during the UPA regimes at the Centre since 2004 now number 1.18 lakh. Gujarat, Karnataka and UP showed a rising trend of farmer suicides since 2004.

Besides the well known farming crisis states, it is the figures from states like Assam that startle. The northeast state recorded 312 deaths in 2011 and 269 in 2010.

From 16000 in 2010 , down to 14000 in 2011 shows that there is improvement . However , much more actions need to be taken. Indian needs to concentrate on the manufacturing sector on a war footing . The farm sector just does not need as many people as are engaged in it . The manufacturing and construction sector need to absorb these extra people .

I hope things continue to improve , but it will take time.

Albeit, the overall decline is indeed encouraging, but sadly statistics from some States show a marked increase in the figure.

Indonesia, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Argentina, etc. are all growing faster than India's 5.3%.

The overall figure is more important . But yes , some states showing an increasing trend needs to be looked at . Hopefully they will, these stats will wake them up to the problem and they too will show improvement next year like other states.

And Yes, the poor always lose out . The good thing though is that poverty is decreasing at a good pace according to the World Bank . From 51.4 % in 1990 to 32.7 % in 2010 is not a bad achievement . Hopefully by 2030 or so these things should completely stop .

Growth rate should always be considered for one whole year and not just one quarter . India grew by 6.5 % in 2011 . One of the fast growing economies of the world if not one of the fastest .

Many of these farmers grow cash crops like Cotton that are prone to climatic fluctuations. Its like a lottery, if they make it they will be rich, if they fail they go into debt and inorder to payoff that debt will again grow cotton next season.

And one may ask, whenever there is a drone strike or bomb attack inside Pakistan, how do Indians manage to find time from clapping to typing and posting the incidents without failure. Does the Pakistani loss effect Indians in any manner. Never ever heard an Indian member loosing a dear one due to terror attacks in Pakistan. The whole sticky thread on terrorism in Pakistan can be virtually attributed to the Indian members.
