13,000 in 2 months: NGO crackdown unleashed by the Modi govt will create a human rights crisis

It's other way around... India is learning from China in these matters!!

.
A lot of these NGO's are nothing but money laundering fronts. Which is why almost all of them were unable to produce audits or tax receipts for their funding. Thus, closed down.

The ones who are genuine, should have no problem providing their records to the government.

For last one year all the articles written by FIRSTPOST is either criticising govt. and modi. Is there any aticle which hss praised the govt.
Also about NGOs fcuk them . Most of these foreign funded are antinational. According to reports these ngo effect 2 to 3 % of gdp annually.
Now thats bigger than our defence spending

Most of English media is blatantly anti-Modi. Ambani is used to having government in his pocket, when one isn't, he will try to pressurize them through media. FP is meant for that since Modi doesn't give into pressure.

Modi being a crony-capitalist is a myth propagated by his opponents. Recently, Adani opened a port in Kerela controlled by Congis. Kejru again gave subsidy to Ambani in Delhi. There are just your run-of-mill lies.

Indeed and the funny thing is it's owned by Reliance.

Of course, including ones like the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation and Rotract International that helped make India Poilo free should be booted out. Hare Krishna's forign funding which also helps in Akshaya Patra should also be booted out. It's like supporting BJP means you should be a brainwashed dimwit. He is doing this ONLY to support his crony capitalist friends. Some of them dumped mercury in Ooty so much that Greenpeace protests fixed it (booted out). Many many similar examples.

Yeah, no one knows the real source of income for BJP funding, almost 80% of 2000 crores. You don't seem to be half as concerened? And let me tell you, booting out NGOs is a very distrous thing. I don't have to remind you that they played a major role in bringing out endosulphan related health issues and also in rehabilitation. More importantly there are VERY VERY VERY dangerous companies operating in India today, most notably Monsanto. And they are doing EXTREMELY dangerous things. Instead of booting out NGOs modi should boot out Monsanto. It is a major threat to our society.

Your whole reply is based on my supporting modi govt. As i said earlier every year these ngo effect 2 3% of our gdp ANNUALLY. This is MORE than BILL GATES FORTUNE. Now who is going to pay for 40 to 60 billion every year

.
it is a shameful act for the largest democracy country of india, west should sanction india immediately and refuse visa for modi guy. if it is not working, west should deprive the title of democracy from inida and label it as a rogue country.

how dare for india to violate the principle of freedom set by west?
:woot: A Chinese dictating what the West should do.

.
these delisenced NGO's in india are a selfish money making machines who cater to their foreign owners, they are making lot of money using these NGO's, and when they are asked to submit detail's about their earnings a per the law of the land they run away and complain to america and Europe, this shows they are hiding a lot, these NGO's think they are above the law and they can kick our constitution and law and behave as they want, these traitors are a danger for our national unity and prosperity.
when devyani khobragade was cavity searched and the americans said it is the law of the land, no one objects, when england, and australia, and even russia orders indian people and organisations to follow the law of the land then it's ok, when india says the same thing, many asses are burning.
what has these NGO's been hiding? why do they dont want to show their ledgers, and green peace which says it is a charity and works only with its volunteers, it employees thousands of people as workers and pays salaries, how can a social organisation employee people, if they employee are they following the labor laws? what about their PF and pension why dont they register themselves as a company?
many NGO's have permanent employees with them, why don't they register as a profit making organisations?
and my brother who works in an mnc was approached by green peace people and asked him to give donation of rs.450/- per month and made him sign a form for the deduction through a bank, it was going on when he knew about the nefarious designes of this organisation to harm india, he he wanted to stop the deductions bout for his horror they said it cannot be stopped it is permanent he had to pay for his life, the green peace had bribed the bank not to stop any deductions, they are a bunch of black mailers these NGO's should STFO of india

.
The amount these NGO's receive per year

1) India should have been never short of water. All Indians accessible to clean waters.
2) No malnourished children.
3) No poverty.
4) Everyone educated and everyone going to school
5) India full of greenery and jungles.
6) All Indians are accessible to toilets.

However what is happening is

1) Protests on nuclear plants and other power plants
2) false and misleading charges against specific Governments \ leaders which are never proven in court of law.
3) Protests leading to delays of development projects such as dams and flyovers.
4) Mass religious conversions.

Now those who are crying on human rights and blah blah blah

1) Teesta Setalvad used the money collected for Gulbarg Society victims for her and her husband's personal use. Spent a lot of money on personal shopping. This money was meant for Museum in Gulbarg Society which was never made.

2) All the so called NGO's including USAID did corruption of millions if not billions in Haiti after the earthquake.

3) Medha Patkar and her so called Narmada Bachao Andolan only escalated costs of Sardar Sarovar project but never could stop the work in court of law.

4) Certain American NGO's wanted Kundakulam nuclear power plant project to be cancelled and the same NGO's are working for suspension of Jaitapur Nuclear plant which are Russian and French reactors All these NGO's are working with the help of South Indian Catholic churches.

Why protest only against plants that are using French and Russian reactors?

These are just some small and simple examples.

All the anti national NGO's should be banned. The good one's should be allowed to work.

With the recent de-licensing of 4470 NGOs in India, in addition to the 8875 NGOs whose licenses were revoked in April for violation of rules governing foreign funds, the government of India seems to have set in motion a process that it began by targeting Greenpeace and Ford Foundation.

Legally, the government may be right because these NGOs have reportedly violated government rules they were required to play by, but morally it’s on a sticky wicket because the action was preceded by a lot of anti-NGO paranoia and animosity from its own benches. Going at the present rate of the clamp down - more than 13,000 organisations in two months - one could expect more.

The numbers will be big because India has more than 20 lakh NGOs and reportedly only 10 per cent file their annual returns. If the government is to take action against all the non-compliant ones, it has to close down most of them. A lot of them are certainly dubious, non-transparent, undemocratic and money making enterprises. Some of them, particularly those involved in faith-based activities across all religions, receive huge amounts of money and own assets that arouse genuine suspicion.

But in the overall anti-NGO rhetoric, what gets drowned is the precious civil society voice a democracy like India cannot live without. This is the voice that enabled organisations such as Greenpeace to stand up for the rights of tribals when they were usurped by corporate greed.

Unlike in many poor countries, the share of NGOs doing development work in India is negligible. Its slice of the overseas development assistance, which itself is minuscule, that India receives doesn’t even matter. However, what does matter is that many of these NGOs are engaged in activities that are essential for the survival of our democracy such as holding governments and institutions accountable and standing up for the rights of people, particularly the marginalised and the voiceless. More over, they also pilot ideas that strengthen democratic governance. Strong-headed governments obviously don’t like them.
By constricting civil society space, even democratically elected governments all over the world routinely seek to restrict and stymie dissent. In the process, they get around the tenets of democracy such as participation, human rights, transparency and accountability. Last month, Russia introduced a new law under which civil society workers can be jailed if Vladimir Putin’s government thought an NGO was “undesirable”. His targets are nobody, but the rights groups.

A notable casualty of this repressive approach is human rights, and it’s intentional. Human rights encompass a lot of stuff and is a big headache for governments which would like to have its way on critical issues including minority rights and neoliberal policies. With civil society gagged, local and global vigil on rights gets compromised. Still, people stand up to resist their governments and tell the world what’s happening on their home turf at great cost as they did in Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Egypt, Sudan, Uganda and so on. Without civil society resistance and international scrutiny, the scale of the massacre of Tamils by the Sri Lankan government or the threat to life that homosexual men faced in Uganda wouldn’t have been known to the world. Countries such as Saudi Arabia, or even China, are human rights black holes because there is no civil society space.

It’s also civil society organisations in both developing and developed countries that resist the collusion between governments and the Big Pharma in their fight for affordable medicines. NGOs in countries such as Thailand, Brazil and India have played a remarkable role in keeping drug prices under check. Their vigil has also prevented government-submission to MNCs and developed countries through cunning trade treaties.

Just because they receive overseas funding, the truths that the NGOs stand up for don’t become lies. Most of these groups get foreign funding because globally a lot of people and groups are concerned about rights and democracy.

The critical question, therefore, is who gains from a feeble civil society atmosphere? Obviously, autocratic governments, multinational capital and the interests of rich countries. Notwithstanding the old Marxist stream of thought that the idea of civil society is to aid capitalism, there is an abundance of evidence from all over the world that it helps people to stand up against their unjust governments and the exploitative market. Quite often, it has also been successful in forcing governments to change their anti-people policies and programme. Many enabling working models of governance such as participative budgeting and decentralised planning have come up in many parts of the world through civil society participation.

As the United Nations notes, “a dynamic, diverse and independent civil society, able to operate freely, knowledgeable and skilled with regard to human rights, is a key element in securing sustainable human rights protection in all regions of the world.” The government of India certainly needs to be strict with the NGOs in terms of rules, but it should also be careful not to paint all of them with the same brush.

Banning NGOs will create a human rights crisis? Since when did these self-righteous, foreign-funded, self-serving interests groups become the champions of human rights? This is merely a convenient banner to hide behind. Thank God there is a GoI now in power that is actually listening to their own intel agencies and focusing on development.

China should definitely take a leaf out of India's book in this department.
It is more like India taking a leaf out of China's if anything.

India is a poor country. Don't imagine all foreign funding is for nefarious purposes.
Whether the foreign funders have nefarious intent or not is irrelevant. Foreign funders by nature have divergent interests with the GoI and thus are very dangerous. Once you have people inside your country drawing an income from sources outside your country you have a very dangerous situation.
