At least 82 people were killed and 200 injured in two bombings that hit Baghdad around midnight Saturday, nearly all of them in a blast targeting a busy shopping area as they celebrated Ramadan, police and medical sources said Sunday.

A refrigerator truck packed with explosives blew up in Karrada in central Baghdad, killing 80 people and injuring at least 200. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, in a statement circulated online by supporters of the ultra-hard line Sunni group. It said the blast was a suicide bombing.

Karrada was busy at the time as Iraqis eat out late during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, which ends next week. Police said the toll could rise as more bodies could be lying under the rubble of devastated buildings.

The bombing is the deadliest in the country since Iraqi forces last month dislodged Islamic State militants from Falluja, their stronghold just west of the capital that had served as a launch pad for such attacks.

A video posted on social media showed people throwing pavement stones at the SUV convoy of Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi in Karrada, a largely Shi’ite are with a small Christian community, venting their anger at the inability of the security forces to protect the area.

Another video posted on social media showed a large blaze in the main street of Karrada after the blast. Reuters TV footage taken in the morning showed at least four buildings severely damaged or partly collapsed.

A roadside explosive device also blew up around midnight in a market in al-Shaab, a popular Shi’ite district in the north of the capital, leaving at least two killed, police and medical sources said.

Iraqi forces on June 26 declared the defeat of IS militants in Falluja, a historic bastion of Sunni insurgency, following a month of fighting. Abadi ordered the offensive after a series of deadly bombings that hit Shi’ite districts of Baghdad.

My god!! 82 people!!, and this will never become a global news, no one would take notice, gays and lesbians are more important to the world than Syrians and Iraqis after all.

Anyways RIP to poor souls

Condemnable and a cowrd act but understandable since IS is facing the defeat so they will reort to these kind of terrorist activities. Govt of Iraq should brace itself and think about countering it in more effective way since such attack will increase with IS loosing ground in battle. My sympathies with are with families of the victims. RIP...really a tragic scene.

RIP RIP will not solve anything. Shia should take revenge in the same way and execute all ISIS prisoners in one day. Iraqi government is weak and shamefull for not taking effective measures and now whole Iraq is at risk. I understand that the people stoned the car of this weak guy Abadi.

What are you going to do about it? why is this the first thing that muslims always say...OH YOU WONT HEAR ABOUT THIS BLAH BLAH BLAH....it was on the main BBC news story at 3am last night and has been on throughout the day.

As has been said, NEWs, this isnt NEWs. Terrible of course but its not a fucking competition to see who can get more media outrage.

Dont get me wrong, i was quite upset after hearing the news, I know I should have phrased it a different way. I mean can you fcukin believe it? 82 people man 82, people are being slaughtered like cattle pretty much every day in that part of the world.

Anyways you are right, i should not have made it sound like some kind of competition. Just to clear the air i am not homophobic, not a muslim either, just a regular guy who often gets upset about people dying like this, irrespective of race, nationality, religion or sexual orientation

RIP to the victims.

The miserable murderers keep getting away with it, while we fight everyone but them. ISIS or Al Qaeda, Taliban, Ttp, JMB or whatever holy name they choose, all share the same ideology and target civilians to make their point.

USA created a vacuum in the ME but the hateful ideology that filled it is our problem. From the small things like not sharing water cups with non Muslims to cheering the killing of Jews, gays & Americans we have let too much hatefulness slide.

There needs to be a co-ordinated, global legislation in the Islamic world, that those who promote hate and violence are outside the fold. We have to take back the discourse and return Muslims to the tolerant, generous spirituality of our religion.

It will continue to be difficult in Iraq to restore law and order unless the Iraqi government forms a reliable national armed forces. The country now is being led by Al Dawa Party that was founded by Iran after the 1979 revolution. Al Dawa party itself, did carry out terrorist operations against Iraqi civilians in the 80s. It is governing the country through terrorist shia militias that basically function with a medieval mind-set. The entire scene is being orchestrated by Iran to ensure that Iraq will never rise again as a power that could harm Iran as it did in the 8 years war.

Here is a list of the shia terrorist militias created and funded by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

That's a topic for another discussion. This thread is about ISIS lunatics and vermin killing our Arab and Muslim brethren in Baghdad during the holy month of Ramadan when every city, town, village etc. across the Arab world is full of life, activity and families. Yesterday was no different. ISIS has shown their ugly face in numerous Arab (KSA included) and non-Arab countries so the primary goal should be to defeat them and like-minded groups who by the way fuel the fire of those groups that you mentioned. It's an evil cycle.

Anyway unfortunately the world, Arabs included, have become used to hearing such unfortunate news on a weekly basis from Iraq and Syria. To begin with Arab lives have not been valued highly in recent years which we as Arabs have a blame for partially as well.

Reports that death toll reached nearly 180 people.

Marginalised Sunnis trying to stage their protest this way? Nope, this this was the act of the bastard child of a malfunctioning ideology that breeds only and only terrorism, and produced only and only terrorists for the world and nothing else even slightly positive for the world.

RIP to innocent souls, the media will not go bust, there will be no vigils, no building lit by in Iraqi flag. Iraqis should unite even more and exterminate this cancer from their countries, and punish, all and literally I mean ALL those who helped ISIS even slightly, regardless of amount of bitching by certain countries who are primary culprits in creating and defending these globalized manace.
