12000 HP Locomotives for Indian Railways

l'm more concerned with that Diesel loco factory as 5000 or higher HP locos are required for required throughput on DFC. Present WDG 4 and WDG 5 would almost be required in twins to achieve balancing speeds of 70-80 kph with 8000 ton trains proposed on DFC. Now with proposed WAG 10 and 11 this won't be a problem but higher Diesel output is definitely required and hence this proposed WDG 6 at 6000 HP is required. here it looks EMD might be having an edge.
Aren't the IR procuring 9000HP locos from Japan explicitly for the DFC?

Hi. You seem to have quite a lot of knowledge about the Railways and its technical requirements. There is a public interest litigation which some of us are planning to move before High Court/Supreme Court (yet to decide) in a related competition commission matter involving Railways. I would really appreciate to get your inputs on the same.

for DFC 2 High horse power IGBT locos are proposed. one is 6 axle Co-Co rated at ~ 9000 hp. this contract as per recent news and IRJ reports is won by Toshiba. these are specifically for western DFC.
initially 200 odd locos are planned, out of 1/3 will come assembled from Japan and remaining will be assembled at Dankuni West Bengal.
Apart from this one more type Bo-Bo+Bo-Bo or 8 axle 12000 hp loco (this loco actually consists of 2 permanently coupled loco units) is also proposed, which is mentioned in this thread.
initially there were 5 bidders out of which 2 chinese bids were not considered further. So as of now Siemens, Bombardier and Toshiba are left in fray.
As per one of contacts in Siemens mobility division, Vectron model is offered for the contract. this loco is in service in number of European countries including freight major Dispolok.

Would love to see more Japanese locos and trains on Indian network.
Well for the western DFC your wish will soon come true.

forgot to add one data, railway is trying to achieve a ratio of 1.5 HP per ton of trailing load for freight traffic. For DFC this may rise to 1.8, so you can appreciate why higher HP is required. this basically is to avoid stalling during strartup on steep grades.

thats WAP 7D. however as of now the only thing thats coming for sure is MUed WAP 5 for 160 kph service of 22+ coaches.

Dear You are an authority with lots of information in this area. Good work. keep it up.

What I dislike about these locos is the shape. I would prefer aerodynamic shape for higher speed and fuel economy.

And almost all Locomotives in Indian Railways service use the Co Co bogies, except the WAP 5 and WDP 1 which use the BoBo.

@anant_s are the WDP 1 still in service. I have never seen them except on an YouTube video.

What?

India still needs foreign assistance and know-how to make a few damn locos?

Perhaps India should consider importing this 11200KW(15000+ HP)200kph locomotive from friendly China?:D

Bo-Bo wheel arrangement is most suitable for passenger locos and simplified freight locos.
prior to WAM 4 and its contemporary WAG 5 all electric locos were Bo-Bo.
after ALCO supplied WDM2 to India, the first examples of Co-Co trimount bogives were seen and the advantage of this arrangement on lighter rails supporting moderate speed 60-70 mph was realized. these were quite suitable for Indian rails of 60s and 70s. Later this Bogie arrangement was found to be very suitable for electrics as well and hence WAM 4, WAG5, entire WCM series and later all of WAP series barring 5 and WAG series.
In 95 when Aitraz signed for LOK 2000 variant WAP 5 it was first Bo-Bo in almost 25 years and probably the best dedicated passenger loco ever.
as for WDP1 as on today only few examples survive based at Tughlakabad and Vijayawada. The problem of lower rated primemover (about 2100 HP) and reliability had relegated them to Passenger train of lowest priority only.

800 Train Coaches from Pune Now Fitted with Bio Toilets

Train passengers will soon be relieved of the ever increasing stench on railway tracks because of human waste which is discharged directly from train toilets on to the tracks. 800 coaches of trains originating from Pune have been installed with eco-friendly toilets.

IIndian railway tracks will soon be free of human waste discharged from train toilets, and also from the ever growing stench on railway stations.

About 30% coaches of trains originating from the Pune railway division now have bio-toilets. This comes to 800 coaches in Pune, and the remaining coaches will be modified in a phased manner.

This is a part of the efforts being made to make the Pune-Lonavla track a clean route, wherein all trains will be installed with bio-toilets. These environment friendly toilets process the waste with bacteria and convert it into water and gas, hence restricting direct discharge on tracks. The bio-toilet unit is situated under the coach. The waste is released on tracks in the form of harmless water after chlorination, while the gas is released in the air.

The direct release of waste worsens the condition of tracks and is also harmful for the environment. In turn it also leads to loss of large amounts of water which goes in cleaning the tracks. As per the plans of the Union Railway Ministry, all existing toilets in coaches will be replaced to bio-toilets by 2021.

In addition to this, volunteers will also be appointed at platforms to stop passengers from using toilets when the train halts at stations.

“The Pune station has a daily footfall of about 93,000 passengers with over 150 trains passing through the station every day. So the task is challenging,” said Divisional railway manager (DRM) Suneet Sharma, adding that the administration will make large scale efforts to obtain cleaner tracks, and platforms.

Do we have a dedicated thread for Dedicated :-) freight corridor on forum.
If not can one of you create one in suitable section, i'll be happy to contribute
No such thread exists, I would love it if you could create one and contribute! The DFC (and larger DMIC project) is something I try to follow as much as possible so anything you could provide would be very much appreciated.
