12 farmers arrested in Pabna for defaulting loans

Police in Pabna have arrested 12 farmers and are looking for 25 others following an arrest warrant against a total of 37 farmers for defaulting on loans taken from a government bank.

A judge on Friday ordered the arrestees to jail after they were produced in the court, said Arvind Sarkar, chief of Ishwardi Police Station.

The arrestees are Alam Pramanik, 50, Mahatab Mandal, 45, Abdul Gani Mandal, 50, Shamim Hossain, 45, Samad Pramanik, 43, Noor Boksh, 45, Mohammad Akram, 46, Mohammad Rajab Ali, 40, Kitab Ali, 50, Hannan Mia, 43, Mohammad Majnu, 40, and Mohammad Atiyar Rahman, 50.

The loan amounts range from Tk 25,000 to Tk 30,000, according to the police officer, reports bdnews24.com.

Arvind said some of the farmers claimed they were arrested despite paying off their debt in full to Bangladesh Samabaya Bank, one of the oldest cooperative banks operating since 1977.

Some others admitted during preliminary quizzing that they had failed to follow up on the loans for a while, but claimed that their overdue balances were small, he said.

A man named Mozammel Haque filed the case on behalf of the bank in 2021.

The aforementioned agency attempted to reach the local office of the bank in Pabna for comment, but no official received any call even after multiple attempts.

The great constant of the world..

in the U.K., government regularly prosecutes people for mistakenly claiming a few quid extra in benefits..

But people who stole millions in covid funding go scot free.

Poor always get punished disproportionately…

Hopefully, these farmers will be spared…

a common man can get bankrupt and lose his business like a restaurant but a banker gets bailed out or a large firm that has failed gets new lease of life.

The farmers loaned less than $4,000.00, but got thrown in the slammer.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hallmark-Sonali_Bank_Loan_Scam ($455 million)

https://unb.com.bd/category/Busines...c-asks-s-alam-group-to-explain-reports/105863 ($3 billion)

I am not sure how many in Pakistan or India got away with $3.5 billion !
S Alam group just happens to own the IBIL (Bank) they stripped to the bone. They just keep rescheduling ( change payment terms) their own loan. Meantime S Alam group bought $370 million Hotel in Singapore.

I think S Alam group wins the "biggest heist" prize hands down in South Asia !

Yep!

Such a big dollar transfer cannot be done without the help of Uncle Sam.

Couple of hundred million, minimum, pocketed by CIA. Another 100 million or so by the Singaporean government.

Cuts for Singaporean officials etc etc

Another 100 million y to British banks for doing the paperwork.

You can't pin this one on CIA.
IBIL bank is a an Islamic bank. PM Hasina accused the bank of having close relationship with Jamaat Islami, forced a change of ownership by handing it over to S Alam group.
You know the rest of the story from my previous post.

Dollar transfers of that magnitude cannot happen without explicit nod of the CIA.

They monitor intra bank dollar transfer very closely.

In this case, permission had to be granted by American embassy in BD months in advance. Without that explicit nod - tiny Singapore would not partake in the heist.

It’s all facilitated by Uncle Sam - for which they take a hefty cut - as big as 50%.

Hasina doesn’t have the power to transfer dollars between borders!!!

Not even Putin can do that!!

You really are thick!!!
