KARACHI: Ten thousand army personnel have been deployed in Karachi to ensure security during the upcoming general elections.
In a press briefing after a meeting under the chair of Army Chief General Ashfaq Pervaiz Kayani, DG ISPR Major General Asim Saleem said it had been decided that no army officers will be deployed at polling stations, rather the army will act as a quick response force during the elections. The DG ISPR said the army will use helicopters for this purpose.
According the DG ISPR, 104,000 army officers will be deployed across Sindh, adding that they will retreat depending on the situation after the elections. The DG ISPR further said integrated strategy is being employed in Karachi due to an increasing security threat in Sindh.
Meanwhile, the DG ISPR also said that the distribution of ballot papers has been completed in Balochistan.
