Actually it was not popularized by British.....they did pay tribute to their Sikh soldiers but nowhere they mention "20,000 vs 21" or "14,000 vs 21" in any of their reports of 1897 and 1897.......... Actually they fought to the death, because Sikhs knew that Pashtuns would not spare their lives...
