So they did left some room to maneuver on "technical issues" which china made its base for opposition.
You might be right.
But what chinese do not understand is they might have done exactly what US wanted, make china look anti India. It is bound to have effect on Indo china bilateral relations as such. Chinese diplomats know this. CPC PLA might not.

Even with the purposed GE engine it's not going to be a true fifth gen aircraft anyway. And that's one of the items by the way.
R & D is what required to achieve that capability.
Probably if Indians are smart enough and continue on the current development path (Economically Militarily), those two odd decades should be enough to grow ourselves out of this pakistani quagmire forever.
