Likely it doesn't mean anything. If you say to them you'll call the police to help them settle the matter, they'll tell you nothing had happened.
There's nothing wrong there imo. Australians care about their own first and foremost...
On topic, I'm not culturally rooted or religious so I don't really care whether my culture is accepted here or not. I'm not Australian, so if it turns out somehow I'm not welcome here I'll simply go back.
Your observation, or conclusion rather, will change when you've seen enough Chinese people. My point was, they both look different. The man has coarser features than the woman in areas like nose, lips, more prominent jaw line, neck etc etc.
