    Ironically, Urdu is a foreign language to Pakistan. Prior to 1947, hardly anyone in modern-day Pakistan spoke it, Farsi was significantly more common despite British attempts to replace it. Even today, only about 8% of Pakistanis speak it as their mother tongue.
