Indo Aryan Languages of South Asia

Was just skimming this thread and its devolved quite a bit. A few points. In Vedic literature (especially the Rig Veda) Aryans distinguish themselves from non-Aryans by using appeals to both culture and race. So non-Aryans (basically the native Indians) are described as Mlecchas both due to...

Indo Aryan Languages of South Asia

Ethnically Pakistani (half Punjabi, half Muhajir), born and raised in America. I don't know what "brand India" is, if I go back and forth between using India or South-Asia its probably random.

Indo Aryan Languages of South Asia

Urdu and Hindi are the same language, there's no debate about this. Very slight differences as Urdu has more loanwords from Farsi and Hindi from Sanskrit, but they are 95% the same. I'm American with Pakistani roots interested in South Asian history, linguistics, and culture.

Indo Aryan Languages of South Asia

Urdu is classified as a Hindustani language, mutually intelligible with Hindi. It has some loanwords from Farsi and Arabic, but the vast majority of its vocabulary and syntax is Central Indo-Aryan.

Indo Aryan Languages of South Asia

There's debate about what makes one language separate from another. Personally I place mutual intelligibility as the deciding factor, with vocabulary as second. Though depending on the languages being compared, vocabulary and syntax can have different impacts of the intelligibility between...

    Punjabi Genetics

Correct, most of the Punjabi Dalits are in Indian Punjab/Haryana, though there are also many in Pakistani Punjab. I'll try and work on it. Maybe for my next chart where I'll show other ethnicities of South-Asia alongside Punjabis. I'll address any specific questions or concerns you have.

    New Pakistan Genetic Map

Syeds don't descend from the Prophet, but they do carry significant Middle-Eastern or Turkic ancestry from the Islamic era. The most recent paper found that the ancient Iranian admixture into the Indus Valley occurred much earlier than previously thought. These Iranians weren't Neolithic...

    New Pakistan Genetic Map

According to research published just a couple months ago, Iranian Hunter Gatherers may have entered the Indus Valley as early as 12,000 BC. Aryans did not arrive until around 2000 BC. Prior to the arrival of the Aryans, the people of the Indus Valley were a mix of two primary ancestries; the...

    New Pakistan Genetic Map

I'm half Arain, half Muhajir. Genetically Arains cluster most closely to Punjabi Khatris from India, at least based on the samples I have. They show fairly low European admixture, meaning less mixing with the ancient Aryan migrants. They have the highest Caucasus signal among South-Asians...

    New Pakistan Genetic Map

Its an area I've very interested in, I try not to get dragged into the drama that can accompany it. History is actually more important for me, but those posts take longer to write. I do have some historical map presentations I'm working on that I'd like to post soon.
