Their role is special ie amphibious warfare but they are not an elite unit in terms of Special Operations. Special Forces operate behind enemy lines Marines don't.

Exeter has a main campus in Exeter city and a second one in Cornwall which is where I am. The UOTC is at the main campus and was too far away to join (2 hours drive) so I joined the local TA unit who are The Rifles.

US Marines are not Special Forces. Though they do have a USMC Special Operations Command.
