Farhan's 106 blows away Zalmi for United's second win

It was the second successive win for United and the second straight loss for Zalmi

Sahibzada Farhan gets funky, Islamabad United vs Peshawar Zalmi, PSL 2025, Rawalpindi, April 14, 2025

Sahibzada Farhan smashed 106 off 52 balls • PCB

Islamabad United 243 for 5 (Farhan 106, Munro 40) beat Peshawar Zalmi 141 (Haris 87, Wasim 3-26, Dwarshuis 2-23) by 102 runs

A century from Sahibzada Farhan powered Islamabad United to their second successive blowout win. Peshawar Zalmi were the unfortunate opponents, brushed aside for the second time in as many matches as they succumbed to a 102-run defeat.

An onslaught of sustained power hitting from United's stable of big hitters saw them post 243 - the highest score in this edition. Zalmi were never in contention despite the best efforts of Mohammad Haris' 47-ball 87. Imad Wasim and Naseem Shah eased the batters out of the way relatively early in the chase before Zalmi folded for 141.

United opted to bat first this time, and it was immediately obvious this pitch was more conducive to batting than the tournament opener. Alzarri Joseph conceded just three in the first over before USA's Andries Gous fell in the next, but once Farhan cracked his first boundary, United cut loose. 73 came in the powerplay, 22 of which Farhan pillaged in one over from Under-19 pace bowler Ali Raza.

But, as has been the trend this season, the fireworks didn't stop once the field spread out. Sufiyan Muqeem, Zalmi's best bowler, went for 16 in the ninth over, and 16 more in his third as Colin Munro, who had been largely content operating in Farhan's slipstream, began to take centrestage.

By now, Farhan had brought up a 49-ball hundred, and though Joseph returned to remove the pair within four balls of each other, United had by now amassed 163 with six overs still to go.

Zalmi had left the wicket-taking too late, and United had enough remnant firepower to continue their attack. Azam Khan, Salman Ali, Jason Holder and Ben Dwarshuis all chipped in with cameos to add 80 off the last six.

It was a total Babar Azam is, in truth, ill-suited to help chase down, so his early departure, nicking off to first slip off Dwarshuis on his third delivery, didn't tilt the scales much. But Mitchell Owen, promoted after his cameo against Quetta Gladiators over the weekend, fell the following over, and Saim Ayub followed suit cheaply. By the end of the fourth over, Zalmi were 26 for 3, the asking rate was already close to 14, and the contest was on the brink of collapse.

An individual effort was never going to salvage things, much as Haris tried. His absence of form in T20 cricket of late has been both a Zalmi and Pakistan concern, but he was brutally effective, picking up Drawshuis for a four and six the following over, and plundering two sixes in a 17-run over off Holder after the powerplay.

But team support was in short supply. Wasim held the nagging line that makes him so difficult to dispatch, and brought about Tom Kohler-Cadmore's dismissal on his return in the ninth over. The game entered a pattern which saw Haris find the boundary regularly in the overs that followed, only to lose one partner after another.

He knew it couldn't last, and it was perhaps fitting Wasim applied the coup de grace. Haris slapped him over midwicket to get up to 87 before finally failing to get underneath one and hole out to long-on; it was the ninth Zalmi wicket to fall. Two overs later, Dwarshuis cleaned up Mohammad Ali as the trophy holders swiftly put themselves in pole position for another tilt at the title.

Sahibzada Farhan celebrates century with Colin Munro

Farhan scored 97 runs in a partnership of 144 with Colin Munro

Opener Sahibzada Farhan scored his fourth T20 century in the space of a month as Islamabad United hammered Peshawar Zalmi by 102 runs in the Pakistan Super League.

Last month, Farhan made 114 not out, 162 not out and 148 for Peshawar in the National T20 Cup - Pakistan's domestic T20 competition below the PSL - and continued that form with 106 from 52 balls in Rawalpindi.

He struck 13 fours and five sixes to power Islamabad to 243-5 - the highest score in this year's PSL.

Mohammad Haris made 87 in pursuit but, with wickets falling around him, Peshawar did not threaten their mammoth chase and were dismissed for 141.

Babar Azam was out for one, fellow Pakistan batter Saim Ayub six and Somerset's Tom Kohler-Cadmore eight.

But in making his first PSL ton, 29-year-old Farhan became just the fifth man, after Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli, Jos Buttler and Shubman Gill, to hit four T20 centuries in a year. He has done so in nine matches.

Farhan played three T20s for Pakistan in 2018 and was recalled for a further six matches last year but has scored only 86 runs across nine internationals at an average of 9.55.

..The Gladiators suffered from a disastrous batting session.

The surface was tacky from the start, and they failed to bat based on the calibre of the ball. Playing too many unnecessary aggressive strokes, hitting the slog sweeps against the turn, and failing to correctly read the line and length of the bowlers.

The Gladiators face early challenges as they lost the wickets of Finn Allen in the first over and Nawaz in the second. After losing the first five wickets in the Powerplay, they were unable to recover.

The Kings' fielders performed admirably throughout. Despite carrying the bat in a T20 match and only managing to score 33 runs off 40 balls, Saud Shakeel had a peculiar innings. Amir delivered a fascinating cameo down the order, scoring 30 runs off 16 balls. Nabi is the standout bowler, giving only 7 runs and taking two wickets in his four overs. With three wickets, Hasan Ali was the leading wicket-taker. Abbas Afridi also claimed two wickets.

With a stellar all-round performance, Peshawar Zalmi made a commanding return in the 10th edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) securing their first win by defeating Multan Sultans by 120 runs as the Sultans struggled and succumbed to their third consecutive defeat of the tournament.

Multan Sultans’ chase began shakily, with the loss of their captain Mohammad Rizwan early in the chase. Rizwan was dismissed for 15 off 9 balls, caught by Luke Wood off Saim Ayub’s bowling.

The early breakthrough proved crucial as the Sultans were left to rebuild their innings, but wickets continued to fall at regular intervals. Shai Hope was dismissed for 20 off 20 balls, caught by Mitchell Owen off Arif Yaqoob’s delivery.

Following his dismissal, Usman Khan provided some hope for the Sultans with a quickfire 44 off 22 balls, including 4 fours and 3 sixes. But his stay at the crease was short-lived, as he was dismissed by Arif Yaqoob, leaving the Sultans at 85/3.

Kamran Ghulam and Michael Bracewell failed to make much of an impact, scoring 6 and 3, respectively. Ali Raza was the main wicket-taker for Zalmi, claiming three important wickets, including the dismissals of Ghulam, Bracewell, and Ashton Turner. Turner was dismissed for a duck, struggling to find any form.

Iftikhar Ahmed was also sent packing cheaply, falling for just 2 runs. The pressure continued to mount as David Willey (13) and Usama Mir (1) quickly followed suit, both caught by Zalmi fielders.

The tailenders, Ubaid Shah and Akif Javed could not provide any significant resistance, and Multan Sultans were bowled out for just 107 in 16.3 overs.

HBL PSL X: Islamabad United outclass Karachi Kings to seal fourth straight win

Kings faltered on a tricky pitch, posting just 128 as United chased it down with ease, winning with 17 balls to spare.

Defending champions Islamabad United continued their dominant run in the 10th edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) with a convincing seven-wicket victory over Karachi Kings at the National Bank Stadium on Sunday.

Opting to bowl first on a two-paced surface, United's bowlers delivered a disciplined performance to restrict Karachi Kings to a modest 127/8 in 20 overs. In reply, United chased down the target with 17 balls to spare, securing their fourth consecutive win in the tournament.

In stark contrast to the Kings’ struggles with the bat, Islamabad United began their chase with intent, led by the in-form Sahibzada Farhan, who blazed his way to 30 off just 18 balls, striking five boundaries and a six.

His brisk innings propelled United to 34 in quick time before a stunning catch by David Warner ended his stay, handing Karachi their first breakthrough. Hasan Ali struck again in the same over, clean bowling Colin Munro to momentarily pull United back.

Despite the early blows, United remained in control. Azam Khan anchored the middle overs with a steady 31 off 30 deliveries, while skipper Shadab Khan played a captain’s knock, guiding the chase with a fluent 47 off 40, laced with five fours and two sixes.

Though Hasan Ali and Abbas Afridi managed to pick up wickets, Karachi’s modest total left their bowlers with little margin for error.

Mohammad Nawaz (8* off 12) and Muhammad Shahzad finished off the chase as United wrapped up the win at 129/4 in 17.1 overs.

Earlier, Islamabad United’s decision to bowl first proved spot on as their bowlers capitalised on a slow, unpredictable surface to restrict Karachi Kings on a low total.

The pitch offered inconsistent bounce and noticeable grip, making batting a difficult proposition. The ball often held up on the surface, with the odd delivery keeping low, disrupting the batters’ rhythm throughout the innings.

Kings got off to a nervy start as captain David Warner fell early for just 3, bowled by Naseem Shah, while James Vince was unable to get going before he was dismissed by Jason Holder for 4 off 7 deliveries.

Tim Seifert top-scored for the Kings with a laboured 30 off 37 balls, before falling to Imad Wasim via a return catch. Young Saad Baig looked promising during his 17-ball 20 but was removed by United skipper Shadab Khan, who also claimed the wicket of Irfan Khan to maintain pressure in the middle overs.

Karachi Kings won the toss and elected to field first against Peshawar Zalmi in the 11th match of the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) Season 10 at the National Stadium, Karachi.

The match marks Karachi Kings’ final appearance at their home ground for this season, with both teams aiming to secure vital points as the tournament approaches its mid-point.

Karachi Kings captain David Warner said his side is focused on reading conditions early and maintaining their strong fielding.

“We are trying to adapt to the conditions, probably rotate the strike more. It’s about adapting to the wicket straightaway whether it's bat or ball. Our fielding has been outstanding,” Warner said. “Bowling first, we want to restrict them under 150. Playing the same team.”

Peshawar Zalmi skipper Babar Azam also preferred to bowl first but remained optimistic. “We also wanted to bowl, but the toss is not in your hands. We will give our best,” he said.

“Confidence is always high after a win. The pitch looks better than yesterday, and I think 170 would be a good total. We’re going with the same team.”
